Google Ads... Waste of Space

December 10, 2003 1:10 PM

Yesterday for about 24 hours put Google's text-only ads on the blog post pages. Google's text ads are cool in that they show ads relating to what is on the page. So if the blog entry is about an XBOX game, the ads will relate to the XBOX.

During that time there were 4,480 page views, showing 17,920 ads.

I've decided to take down the Google ads. Do you know why? 17,920 ads were shown, guess how much money I made?

Zilch. Zero. Nada.

Here's what the ads look like.

Not a single paid ad was clicked on. Ads could have been clicked, but Google doesn't count non-paid ads, which are shown on pages that Google hasn't scanned or doesn't have good ads for. Google doesn't tell you how many non-paid ads are clicked on or what percent are non-paid.

I'm not doing this site to make money, but I thought that it would be a nice bonus for the many hours I've put in it every evening.

I've made a simple tool for checking what Google Adsense text ads will display on your site, or any site for that matter.

I have been quite successful with Google ads at http://www.meetingbywire.com.

As always this is a YMMV situation, but I would suggest that you try for a longer period. Google's algorithm for what ads work on your site may also take a while to kick in.

I am not sure what format you tried but I find the 120x600 skyscraper format is better from a space perspective.

who clicks on ads?

Ir tules. I have made a proof with my site, and its ok

Dylan,

My Windows XP Support website makes a healthy income from Goodles Ad's!

How much have you guys been making from Google ads?

I think about 20 cents per click and between 2%-3% of click thrus seem to be the norm.

I put them on my new site http://www.findaresume.com

I've heard that sites like digitalslr.org and pvr.blogs.com make some serious money from google ads. The key seems to be to advertise on sites with a very narrow focus, but with a lot of Internet driven interest.

Works great on this site... http://www.homefindinginfo.com

I made about 50 dough in one and a half month...I think my site is average, and on jokes

www.roflmao.co.nr

Update.... going national soon with the site. Google is doing well.

Dylan,

Did you only put them on for 24 hours? If so then that is probably why you didn't make any money. As far as I know Google has to crawl your site for content so it can then display adverts relevant to your site. If you only put them on for 24 hours then you're not really helping google.

I think they work really well. My site is pretty big and is now starting to make some money.

My webisite, http:/www.theplaceforitall.com/gmail.htm is making some money each day, but lately my ads have been very untargeted. I expect them to be targeted again soon.

Dylan:

I don't think 24 hours is enough time to give Google Adsense a chance to perform optimally. It takes a while for Google to optimize ads for your site. First it senses (hence the name Adsense) the content on a particular page, then it attempts to serve up the highest earning Ads that relate to the page's subject matter. At times, it could take a couple of weeks to find the "best use" for a given page, depending upon what all topics are discussed in the content text.

I too was VERY discouraged with Google Adsense, making $0.00 the first couple of days, so I yanked the Adsense coding out of all my pages. Three months latter I decided to give Google Adsense another chance, after discovering the limitations of other web ad programs. But the second time I gave the program time to optimize for my web sites content, and my earnings have been steadily growing ever since.

Here's an example on how Google Adsense optimizes for the subject matter of a web page. In this particular case, it's comparing the cost of different forms of Broadband from DSL, Cable, Satellite & Wireless ISPs for the purpose of providing IP Phone service:

http://www.onelasvegas.com/wireless/compare.html

Now I make a decent living entirely from Google Adsense, which allows me to donate the majority of revenue I earn from the Broadband Service subscriptions to Disaster relief organization.

So my advice to anyone is to give Google Adsense a try if your are serious about earning revenue from advertisements. If you design your site correctly, Google Adsense provides excellent earnings potential. Good luck to all.

my site at http://www.flyingroman.com makes all its revenue from Google ads, bearing in mind its not much, but at least pays for hosting costs.

All of my ads are for Bob Dylan albums and books. Is there some way to tell Google that I have *nothing* to do with Bob Dylan?

I have a forum at www.gutfeel.com, the site gets lot of hits from search engines. Yes some ads don't make sense, but some do and make my site look nice.

Well I dont get many hits but it is not like it is a really pain to setup so I think I will give it a try.

Here's an example of a site that uses Google Adsense to their advantage, and tastefully designed.

http://www.homefindinginfo.com

my site is http://www.bargainwebsolution.com

Stuart [aka Cameron] is such an idiot, trying to get hits on his site by complementing it as if he was someone else.....

I put up google ads on http://www.originblog.com, and withen 48 hours I got 80 cents.

Sam - very cool site. I found that I make a lot more if I put the ads where people see them.

Not sure what I'll make, but I just put some on my in-development blog site the other day. I'm assuming that the ads will be better targeted when I get things organized better, and add more content.

In fact, my site alldotnet.com is earning decent amount through google ads.

So I am pretty much satisfied.

Initially, on my site the ads were in some different format, recently there are some ads that doesn't make any sense

We do about $1 a day on adsense

We have about 6k unique a month, used to equal about 10% from adsence, however we ended it due to customer/visitor complaints.

I am testing with a script to translate the page to other languages using Google translator, the AdSense ads now get pulled in from Google in the relevant language.

Is Adsense worth it?

I am trying it on my site www.makeasearch.com but I am not getting very good results. I don't think it yields any good result.

I will see, then I may stop using adsense on www.makeasearch.com

Nice post though!

Does any one knows about pay per call.

Thanks

Adsense is worth the time and effort you put into it.

Google has been doing fine for me, I have had it for about 6 months and am doing just fine with it. I use it primarily on my Windows Media Support Site.

All the best
