CES 2005 - Custom Auto Electronics
Friday, January 7, 2005
There was an entire building dedicated to companies that specialized in customizing automobiles, or as they say in the biz, pimp my ride. I didn't see Xzibit, but I did see a lot of nice custom rides.

This was perhaps one of the biggest announcements at CES, but nobody could hear it over the incredibly loud car speakers all over the place. HD Radio is digital radio over normal airwaves. So no fancy XM or Sirius satellite radio thing to get. You still need a new radio to be able to use it though. Clear Channel, one of the biggest monopolies in radio, announced intentions to transition all of their radio stations to HD Radio over the next year. This could signal a quick end to XM and Sirius.

HD-not! Local radio even in HD will still have the same annoying ads and commercials. We are a bit late with the whole digital radio, the UK has something similar called DAB radio. Plus, HD is still local content unlike XM and Sirius which is coast-to-coast.

I think "local" radio will still be popular because many people prefer the locally-tuned news, weather, traffic, information, song preferences, and ads - you aren't going to hear about local bar happy hours or bands coming to town on a national satellite station.
While there might be a special satellite station for local news and weather, I don't think it's the same as having that content as part of a station you are listening to.
Maybe XM and Sirius could past that technical hurdle and customize specific parts of the broadcast for each region it would help make it more popular.
