Microsoft Campus Tour

Friday, February 20, 2004
For your viewing pleasure and your mild curiosity, I spent an hour driving around the main Microsoft campus and two satellite campuses and took lots of photos. I also met with the popular Microsoft blogger Robert Scoble.

Microsoft Studios - where many Microsoft online videos are created. Inside this building all of the artwork are custom-made realistic blueprints of houses and buildings from TV shows and movies as if they were real buildings. They have houses from sitcoms such as The Brady Bunch, cartoons such as the Jetsons, and much more. They also have one of those 3D laser scanning machines for scanning actors to put into games.

One of ugliest buildings (from the outside) is the Museum and Company Store. Ironically the Museum was being renovated when I was here this past summer with my girlfriend, and it was undergoing a separate renovating this visit as well. The best part is playing with old computers that have Windows 1.0 and Windows 2.0 on them. So much hasn't changed, you wonder if today's version of Windows still has some of that old code in it.
Dylan Greene, posted 2/24/2004 11:30:00 AM
They also have a box of Microsoft Bob on display!
The Company Store has WinXP Pro on sale for $30 US. Only for FTEs and their privileged guests, sadly.

I have a shrink-wrapped copy of Bob on display in my office. :)

FWIW - the Museum has been under construction every time I've visited campus since I've been hired (4 yrs now).

We do close a lot, always changing and updating stuff. to be honest we get delayed a lot about reopening. If you do make it back here someday I can asure it's a lot better than the old museum.

This is RedWest, which is not part of the main Microsoft campus, but not too far just down the street. The banners on the lightpost used to be common place to help visitors know which building does what, and for motivation to the employees. I'm not sure why only MSN has these things these days.
This used to be where Micrsoft made the games and hardware, and it was great fun to walk around the offices and see plans for games on the walls and designs of keyboards and mice that never made it to market.
Dylan Greene, posted 2/24/2004 11:33:00 AM
RedWest is also home to the best cafeteria and the largest percentage of women anywhere @ MS.
Who am i?, posted 2/29/2004 5:18:00 PM
RedWest B is still the home of Microsoft Hardware. Special hardware labs in the building are too expensive to move elswhere so Hardware is more or less staying at RedWest. Inside the lobby is a giant plastic Intellimouse about 6 feet tall and a matching trackball.

Redwest was originally the home of the Consumer Division ("Microsoft Home") when it opened in the fall of 1995. I was on Encarta in Building C when it opened; building D and E were still under construction. Now Redwest is mostly MSN. There was once a plan to move MSN to a new complex, but that was nixed because the Saturn test lab in building E was far too expensive to move.

Anonymous, posted 3/5/2004 11:14:00 AM
I'm moving up here in a month or so... to Redwest, I mean.
Click Happy, posted 5/25/2004 8:44:00 PM
Building C housed the Digital Media Center, an eclectic maze of digital audio and video editing suites (using mostly Digidesign and Avid gear) plus open areas for 2D / 3D graphics and motion capture. This was Microsoft's biggest and arguably best studio for integrating digital media into software products. Later, much of this work was outsourced to media vendors.

Many people don't realize that Nintendo's USA HQ is only a few blocks from Microsoft's campus. It's surprising with their close proximity that they have never had any kind of partnerships. I only took this one photo of Nintendo's building because their buildings are all these boring white structures, and this is supposed to be a tour of Microsoft's campuses.

In response to the chicken sh*t who lacks the balls to put a screen name down...

Yes, it is true, Nintendo has had failures. HOWEVER, People want new and interesting technologies, do they not? Otherwise none of these companies would be in existance. in order to do that, risks are taken. Some do it more than others. No ones f*cking perfect. Nintendo is on the front lines, trynig new things with each system. Lets see microsoft release a new and innovative way of doing things in the console gaming world.

And FYI, i highly doubt this is where "the next 3 failures" are cooked up. that would be in NOA HQ, Japan. Im not positive but im pretty sure.

This is one of the many buildings where the XBOX teams reside. Walking around I could see posters of Flight Simulator and Project Gotham in the windows. Many people on the first floor had their TV's on with Japanese XBOX games running that I haven't seen before. I didn't take any photos of that because I didn't want to get in trouble for corporate spying or something crazy like that. I didn't think taking a photo of the lobby would be a problem, but a security guard came over and asked me not to so I stopped.

Tried searching for "Microsoft building" and then later "Microsoft Office ?? " hehehe

Finally, it was "Microsoft Campus" which did the trick

Anyways, thanks for taking the trouble to satisfy most of our curiosity of what MS WORLD looks like

Hi

I like your stories very much. I want to know where can I get photos of Microsoft Corporate Office (HQ), i need some idea for my design, but i dont know the link to the website. Can you help me. Is the one you show here is the corporate office ?( Why called Microsoft Redmond Campus? Is it a university?)

Kahlo -

Thank you. Those pictures were all taken at Microsoft's HQ. They have many buildings spread over a large area, which is called a campus. There are buildings both on and off the campus. I'd guess that in the Redmond area Microsoft probably has probably 40 to 60 buildings.

If you are looking for one "main" Microsoft building, you aren't going to find it. All of the buildings server some purpose, and I don't think any single building is considered more important than another.

Very nice pictures, now I would sure want to visit the campus if I come to the US.But do normal visitors get access to the whole campus like you did?

Normal visitors can walk anywhere they please. It's spread over a large area and there are no gates to prevent you from driving around. You won't be able to go inside the buildings without an escort, but there is a visitors area with a museum and shop.

Microsoft has 8 million square feet of office space in the Redmond area. Contrast that to the Bank of America tower in downtown Seattle which has 1.5 million square feet and is the 12th tallest building in the U.S.

I was looking for microsoft campus photographs for a long time and my

quest ends at this site.Could your please mail me all the photographs

as i m a big fan of microsoft.

Its a very nice collection. I havent seen such a lot collection about Microsoft.

hi, i've seen all of your photos. I'm interesting how can i get inforation about all of microsoft building on its campus. I'm an architect student. i lived in indonesia. in the past 2 month i heard the governent plan to cooperate with microsoft to build a full-blown microsoft reseaecrh center in idonesia, just like the one in china, india. I planned to use that issue for my thesis to get my architectural degree. my prposal was "Microsoft Research Center Indonesia. I need to know more about microsoft; programs, project, curriculum, etc. Can u help me with the information or just give me the appropriate link where i can get the information. thx.

Its a wonderful tour on microsoft campus, but what the thing that really amazes me is the popularity of cricket among microsoft employees, thats really interesting.  Never seen these much images, and U might be lucky to get all those images shot, instead of the security.

where is the microsoft campus, i need to know this for a school project

Hey I've worked there for years as the Landscaper and I can't believe the photos have not been taken down from the site...  Microsoft is very strick about having their buildings photographed since 9-11.

I have a lot of photos from the summertime when all of the landscape in is full bloom.  It looks like your photos are from the wither months.  If you would like I may send you some more photos that I have taken.
