Microsoft Campus Tour
Friday, February 20, 2004
For your viewing pleasure and your mild curiosity, I spent an hour driving around the main Microsoft campus and two satellite campuses and took lots of photos. I also met with the popular Microsoft blogger Robert Scoble.

Microsoft Building 1. This and a couple other original buildings still stand, but within the last few years Microsoft has been demolishing older buildings to replace them with better built larger structures. You can't tell from this photo, but inside these original buildings it is a total maze trying to find your way around, plus the original cluster of buildings all look the same inside and out, so you can even get lost in the wrong building looking for your desk.
Dylan Greene, posted 2/24/2004 10:46:00 AM
Note to Microsoft Employees - if you know what's done in each of these buildings please leave a caption by clicking on the photos.
It's interesting to many of us and it's nice to learn that Microsoft's software is actually built by humans and not mysterious evil robots or armies of trained monkeys.

So is there really a building 7 or did Douglas Coupland make that up for Microserfs?
Craig, posted 2/26/2004 4:38:00 PM
Building 7 is like the spoon.
KC, posted 2/27/2004 5:19:00 PM
The reason why an MS building is like a maze inside is because each office was designed to have at least a "window" that looks to the outside. Try to erect a building where each one of its offices has a window and you'll see it will end up being a maze.
Optional :), posted 3/3/2004 7:53:00 PM
Hotels are buildings where each room has a window. Or buildings with an open courtyard in the middle.
m, posted 3/25/2004 7:06:00 PM
Interesting, every employee has a cube with a window.

When I started in May of '87, there were 4 buildings, I was in #3 (All Applications), Systems was in #2, #1 had admin, recruiting, ??, #4 had the library, legal, exec offices, International I think. Lake Bill sat between all the buildings
#5 and #6 got built shortly after that and the infamous #7 never did happen. It was a very nice area with big tall trees, picnic areas, etc. (probably still is)

Building 1 includes Business Process & Integration people who have recently been folded into the new Connected Systems division. People here work on BizTalk, WWF, Commerce Server, RFID, etc.
Mike, posted 10/10/2005 1:30:00 PM
This huge building is still being built. It's far more modern than any building I've seen on campus. Lots of concret and steel, whereas many of the newer Microsoft buildings on this campus use a lot of brick and stone.

This is where the monkeys and evil robots work.

Actually Office will be relocating there so buildings 16-18 are moving there, and I think Visio may finally go to the main campus from their downtown offices.

you would think with the Billions of dollars microsoft had they'd be able to install indoor bathrooms. But no... here are the Jonny on the Spots for everyone in Building 36 (yes this is building 36). Boys on the left, girls on the right.
Tobias Flunke, posted 3/12/2006 10:03:00 PM
You can see the mountains in the distance beyond this building. The one next to it is where I worked on Internet Explorer 5 as a summer intern in 1998. These were the "new" buildings at the time. At that time this building was Windows CE. As teams grow and shrink they get moved all of campus, so I don't know what's done in this building today.
Dylan Greene, posted 2/24/2004 10:50:00 AM
This whole area (5 of these buildings, all identical, in a circle) houses the MSN team exclusively now.
Anonymous, posted 2/26/2004 1:51:00 AM
The previous comment is not correct. This is a view to the East of building 32 in the "Pebble Beach" complex. This building currently houses AutoPC and TabletPC.

This is another newer building - an on-campus conference center. This building replaced what was a smaller conference center and the company library (geekiest library ever), which moved somewhere else on campus.
Dylan Greene, posted 2/24/2004 10:51:00 AM
There was also a "pine tree growing area" where this building now stands. The campus is so big and buildings are added so often that they used space just to grow trees to later be placed elsewhere on the campus.
Dylan Greene, posted 2/24/2004 10:52:00 AM

Scott McKneely, posted 2/26/2004 4:34:00 PM
The library is actually slightly off-campus, up 40th across the 520 on your left.
Who am i?, posted 2/29/2004 5:13:00 PM
This building replaced the space that had the company store and Microsoft Museum. Both of those have been moved off campus to a non-descript building. There's a photo of that building somewhere in this collection too.

Ah yes, Corporate Strategy... i.e. the easily identifiable men and women in nice suits. They stand out quite a bit from the rest of us.

If you zoom in you can see that this is the Executive Briefing Center, or EBC. This is where Bill entertains other CEOs, world leaders, and anybody else they need to impress. I think this building also hosts the Microsoft Home of the Future, a full house decked out with gadgets that may be in our homes in the near future.
Dylan Greene, posted 2/24/2004 10:56:00 AM

There are trails all over the Microsoft campus as this map shows, however this map is several years out of date. Even the building I was in five years ago isn't on this map. I'm not sure why they haven't updated these markers, maybe for historic reasons.
The small lake between buildings 1, 2, 3, and 4 is called Lake Bill. There used to be roosters that lived there which would let programmers coding all night know when it was morning.
