AT&T Wireless, Cingular, and the AudioVox 5600
November 20, 2004 4:09 PM
The Good: I'm loving the AudioVox 5600 Smartphone, AT&T's service, the unlimited internet. I'll have an expanded post on this sometime soon.
The Bad: Cingular has bought AT&T, and earlier this week changed all AT&T stores over to Cingular.
The Ugly: Cingular doesn't offer the AudioVox 5600 Smartphone, so they've taken it out of all their stores. Fortunately Amazon still offers the AudioVox for -$25, a great deal for a great phone.
Update: I forgot this when I first posted this message. When in buildings I sometimes see the provider change from "AT&T Wireless" to "310410" and the phone thinks its roaming. I've looked at my bill and haven't seen any roaming charges. So what does 310410 mean?

310410 is a "network number" for Cingular, according to gsmworld.com. The phone (or possibly its SIM) is programmed to show this as roaming, but any GSM America contract with AT&T does not charge for roaming of this type. There is a registry entry you can add to make the phone display Cingular instead of 310410, but I've found that this can make the phone have boot-up difficulties if it doesn't see an AT&T tower.
Apart from Amazon, the Business Center part of Cingular's attwireless.com web site also still offers the SMT 5600. There have been a few postings from Cingular "insiders" on various forums that the company may again offer this phone in the future, possibly with less of the AT&T-specific branding (e.g. mMode) in its configuration. I *LOVE* my SMT 5600 and hope that this will indeed happen.

Dude! Thanks for the info. This phone is totally wicked!! I got it from an AT&T/Cingular store in DC. I must have called and scoured around 10+ stores in the area and finally found one @Penn Ave. I was worried about the loudness of the ringtones which was apparent on the reviews. With enough patience I was able to change this setting. Well, the reviews are wrong! It's friggin LOUD!!

I purchased the Audiovox SMT 5600 about a week ago by calling attwireless. I am pleased at the performance and the syncing capabilities but am sad to see that the developers resources for the phone are slim to none. I think by offering "open" developer resources for Windows Mobile 2003/SmartPhone we would have more choices in software thus generating more revenue for Cingular, Microsoft and Audiovox at the same time making developers and consumers both happy.

i still have a brick, but this is a cool development:
virtual keyboard enables mobile communication device users to project an infra red image of a normal-sized Qwerty keyboard onto any flat surface, and type in naturally whatever information is required.

i have a question on the audiovox 5600; is it possible to run AOL Instant Messanger on this or only MSN? Also, any updated comments from users; are you still happy with the phone? Thanks. Doug

Doug -
Yes and yes. While I don't use AIM, I do use a client that supports it. I use Agile Messenger, which is free here: http://www.agilemobile.com/. I only use it for MSN, and I like it better than the MSN client included with the phone.
I still love the phone and highly recommend it.

SMT5600 AUDIOVOX ISSUES / PROBLEMS
I am an avid fan of Audiovox ... got into a problem couple of months though ... the phone's environment won't change from speakersphone to anything else ... it's been like that for a couple of months now ... I have tried so many things ... did anyone face that issue ever? Here's the path to trying to change it ... go to Start > 9 More > 1 Settings > 3 Profiles. I know how to get to Profiles in a couple of other ways, including by single-touching the power button ... well it's same issue always ... the phone is on "Speakerphone" profile and won't ever get to anything else ...
Anybody, any ideas ... any suggestions ... please help ... thanks!

I have the opposite problem from the one for Nick: My phone doesn't let me get into the Speakerphone profile. Help!
Posted December 8, 2005 5:17 PM
tong,
the speakerphone profile is only used when you manually activate the speakerphone by pressing the talk button for one second during a call. you can only adjust its settings, and cannot select it as an active profile. the same applies to the "headset" and "car" profiles. each of these is triggered automatically as a result of some user action (turn on speakerphone, plug in headset, or connect to car).
i can't imagine why nick's phone is "stuck" in speakerphone mode because mine resets to normal handset mode after every call.

I have some of the same problems above - I cannot get my phone to turn off headset mode. I've unplugged my headset, switched to a bluetooth headset, done a hard reset, everything, no luck. I'll try the speakerphone option too, once I can find a way to turn off the headset mode as I haven't been able to use the speakerphone.

I have read through this - great info.
One question I do have is, I have just recieved my Audiovox SMT5600 and found it to be an AT&T version even though it has a Cingular badge on the front. My question is, can I switch this over to Cingular's version? I know that you can configure the phone and that is cool, but can you simply type in a code or install a package that changes it from AT&T to the Cingulars version?
