Screenshots of the new TeacherReviews.com

March 4, 2004 3:25 AM

I've been re-writing TeacherReviews.com over the last month.  Everything is going great, the new system is fast, flexible, and easy to use.  I'm using the framework that I built to power this site, so reviews are treated like blog entries which means universities and professors automatically have RSS feeds and a feedback system.

The look of the site is all new, and thanks to a helping hand from graphics and web guru FoO, the new TeacherReviews looks great and should perform perfectly on every modern browser.

Here's some screenshots to wet your appetite:

looking great, buddy!

I have found this site very useful in the past, can't wait till it's up and running :) It helps to know other students opinions of a teacher.

It looks awesome.....i can't wait until it is back and don't worry take your time with the designs.

Looks beautiful and very functional. Can't wait till the systems up and working

Looks great. Very clean cut and professional as well. Can't wait to browse it and check out some teachers for next year. Cheers

Teacher Reviews is great. Here at USC it is the best tool for choosing classes. I can't wait until it is back up!

I do like the new look a lot, but the only think should be tweaked is the view in photo 3. It lists a number of different professors but doesn't clearly show who that that professor is unless the reviewer put it right in the review. I only suggest adding the name of the professor be put somewhere where it can be clearly seen in that particular view.

Otherwise, I like the changes you've made so far and hope you can have the site up and running again soon.

Just surfed in from teacherreviews.com. You dated the update May 4th. Text ads would be fine, IMO.

Thanks so much for putting so much time into this!

Thanks for posting all of the updates of what's been happening. It's been nice to be kept up to date.

Such a great site (meaningful & helpful). Looking forward to it's makeover & re-release! As a thanks, I just sent you a donation via PayPal.

whoo hoo! cant wait

IF we had a username on the "old TeacherReview" website, will it still work on the new TeacherReview website?

#7 - Ace: Good idea! I've been trying to keep the UI as clean as possible and sometimes obvious data like the professor's name falls gets dropped off. That's something that really should be there.

#8 - Tistur: Thanks for pointing that out. That's what happens when I work till 3am every night. Well it's almost 3:40am right now... WAY past my bedtime...

#9 - Rustynsf: Thanks for the donation!

#11 - Hey on: YES, you will be able to use your previous accounts, passwords, and edit your old reviews. Plus as a bonus, you can just use your email address instead of a TeacherReviews user name to sign in. As always, your email address will NEVER be shown on the site.

Thanks, everybody, for your feedback.

I need to you!!!!!\(^o^)/

Few things:

1. I think you should start making money on advertising.

2. Take out things like those mini-grades like personality, handwriting, tests, etc. Cuz of the professor gets a lot of F's for the final grade, I already know not to enroll.

3. hopefully you do not allow professors to delete reveiws about them.

^_^ thank you Dylan and foO <3 you guys are doing a great job for us college students. Keep it up. I'm gonna look for ways to give the site some awards =D

An only semi-relevant point: when I signed up for Teacherreviews (over 2 years ago) I inadvertantly made my user ID something easily identifiable. For this reason I have made all of my reviews anonymous. So I have two questions in regard to this:

1. Would there be a way to change my user ID to something less conspicuous?

2. Will it still be possible to post reviews anonymously (i.e. no user ID attached)?

#16 - Anonymous:

1) The userID is changing to just an alias since you will use your email address as your sign-in name. You will be able to change your alias.

2) You will still be able to post reviews anonymously. I know there are professors who are against this but there is no way for me to prevent a student from just typing in a false name, or even worse - another student's name.

Yes! So glad to hear the site will be back up, and it is great news that the old reviews will be preserved. You are amazing to put so much time and effort into this. Thanks!

Thank you for all your hard wprk to bring this site back.I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the work you've put in to get it up and running again.Your sight is truly an asset.

First they fight you, then threaten to sue, then actually sue you, then a trial takes place, then they listen because they have too and all sit down and hammer a solution and ultimately everybody wins.

I hope you do not put this site back on line. It is irresponsiblly monitered. Anyone can post any view and it is true that some are libelous. At my school, some of my colleagues are described with vulgar language. There is no sensible check and balance and a person's reputation can be attacked by some nut case just as easily as critiqued by a sensible fair minded student.

That's why they call it freedom of speech. 1 crazy guy will say this instructor is a total wacko with no personality, another 'sensible' student will say. This instructor did his best to teach the class, but needs some improvement. Some reviews do indeed get personal, attacking a professors personal behavior, attitude, etc. most probably in a more profane manor. But I have had to enroll in a professor or two's class with negative feedback and I have found the most wacky comments to be completely true. I hope the site goes up soon! I'd hate to enroll in another class like Mak's.

Your website has been a lifesaver, and I hope it gets back up and running really soon! It's always great to get feedback from students who have actually taken a class because it's generally honest. Any professor that can't handle criticism and freaks out is obviously not confident in their own capabilities as an educator and has no business teaching anyhow. You should just erase what was said about that one guy and replace it with the threat of litigation instead so students at least know not to take that guy! Hurry back!

Thank You so much for this site. You don't know (or may be you do) how much you are helping students. It's one of the best sites created. Thanks for doing this, and sticking with this. Great, great job.

i think ur doing a nice job..keep it up...it's helped me this semester...thakns

I'm SOOO glad it's back... Banner ADs are fine.. I mean u work so hard and provide this service with your own money..so do whatever u want.. thank you so much!!!

Thanks for all the hard work. There are so many of us counting on you. Let us know how we can help. Cheers.

I am not surprised that some teacher is suing. The idea of the site is good but is flawed. Your site allows anyone who wants to destroy someone's reputation (sick colleague, nasty ex-husband etc.) to post slanderous messages about any teacher. Only actual previous students of that teacher should be allowed to post reviews. They should have to ID themselves somehow in order to post. Anyone can make up stuff and post it, and damage is done which is irreparable.

I think it is ridiculous for prospective students or college administrators to think that what they are reading here is necessarily true. Anything written on the web, or elsewhere, where the identity and reputation of the writer is unclear, should be viewed very skeptically.

I want to know how my name and info can be deleted from your web site.

tara_f@marin.cc.ca.us

Tara - I am adding the ability for professors to request a password that they will distribute to the class. Reviews from students that use that password will be marked as most trustworthy than the rest.

Because reviewers' real email addresses are required and reviews are not posted until reviewers input a passkey emailed to them, the number of slanderous reviews is actually really low. An agree student or nasty ex could just as easily post simular comments on the school's online messageboard, a popular yahoo group, in the aol chatrooms, or start another web site for that purpose.

With the new site you will have the opportunity to mark reviews as Helpful or Not Helpful. If enough people mark a review as Not Helpful it will be "banned". This will help keep up the quality of the reviews while preventing a professor from simply removing all of his or her negative reviews (and keeping the positive ones).

You will also have the ability to respond to reviews and post information about yourself.

Hey hey! I like the idea, but man, regisration is right around the corner!!!!!!!!!!! your website has helped me get some great teachers and I hope you can get this site working soon !!!!! Hurry hurry!!!! :)

A friend and teammate from my very first class showed me this site, and have used it for four classes. I really like this site and have always refered it to MANY of my classmates.I so hope you are up and running soon.

Keep in mind, what is meant to be,WILL!

Bless you all.

Susan

Thanks for create this web, it is really helpful for all the students. I have been use this web for 4 semesters. I don't know how to choose classes without you. : )

You have sold out. Why let the professors have the opportunity to review their own reviews? How in the world are students going to get REAL opinions from other students if the professors are in control of what's seen?

Great job. Your providing a great service to all students alike, and to professors who either have too big of a ego to improve themselves, through mostly rational opinions of there teaching styles. Keep up the great job. Take your time on this.

Hey, glad to see it will be back up. I was wondering, will old reviews still be there, or have they been filtered? In particular, I wanted to change a review I made of a prof. early this term, as he apparently read his review and decided to change his style. So this is at least one case where the bad review made a difference in a good way! Anyway, he is turning out to be better than he originally looked those first few weeks, and I wanted to update or modify my review.

His name is Tricaro, in the biology dept. at CCSF.In any event, I would not want him to know that it was me who wrote that review. I think he might fail me because of it, improvements or no.

thanks!

Registration is coming RIGHT around the corner..i hope the site gets back up soon!

Jewel - Old reviews will be tehre and you will be able to modify or remove your old reviews.

William - how soon is regististration for your school? I'm working as fast as I can and I really want to get it done before registration starts again.

#33 - Students and professors will be able to rate reviews. Professors won't be able to remove reviews that they simply do not like - only reviews that enough registered users agree should be "banned" will be hidden.

Like #28, I would also like to have the opportunity to not have reviews posted about me. I have had a few off-key reviews about my course, including a damning review by a student I confronted for cheating. I'd like to opt out completely.

I don't post opinions about my ill-prepared and deadbeat students on the web! I wonder if some of the above "anonymous" students, especially those who make VERY insulting comments, would like to see their full names and poor attitudes listed so that we teachers could opt out of adding them to our over-crowded classes.

Dunno about other schools, but Summer 04 CCSF Registration starts 4/12 according to their website (although the class schedule will be online starting 3/17).

In response to #39's comment about teachers posting remarks about their students, I think that you should keep in mind that we as students are paying for the class and if certain students choose to be “deadbeats” it is their right. I agree that it is ridiculous they take up space in our overcrowded classrooms but they have just as much right to be there as those of us that want a real education. The overcrowding issue is only going to be resolved by the actions we take within our respective governments, not by weeding out the students that you deem to be undeserving of an education.

Also, teachers are being paid from the student’s tuition and the community's taxes. Therefore, as students and taxpayers we should have the right to know what exactly we are getting for our money.

Thank you Dylan for all of your hard work on this site. It is a great service to the community.

can't wait to use this site again. thanks for all your work trying to get this site back and running. im very anxious to see it all in a new form. thanks again.

Hi #41 - At community colleges, it is NOT the students who are paying the teachers' salaries, it is the state (taxpayers). I always hear students state this, but

they are NOT paying most of the taxes that fund these schools; they are STUDENTS. We teachers are paying far more in taxes than they are.

Consider this: a community college education is a GIFT to students, who pay a nominal sum, far less than the price of a textbook.

Next time you students see a fellow student falling asleep next to you at 10 a.m., or making a phone call in the back of the classroom, or reading a newspaper during class, think about "his rights" vs. how he/she is disrupting the lecture (we teachers cannot IGNORE this type of rudeness) and zapping the energy of the class.

This website is NOT a way to know "exactly what you are getting" in any case - as I mentioned in comment #39, I got damning comments from a CHEATER. The poorly written comments - poor grammar and spelling - and insulting comments - are a sad commentary about today's students who you say are "evaluating" the teachers.

Hey, love this site. Hope it is back online soon. I hope that you can keep the old reviews from the old teacherreview.com site and the former teacherreviews.com. I personally think that CCSF should have their own review site so they can regulate it and only students taking the class can review. But since they'll probably never go for it, I'm glad we have sites like your's so there is an open forum to discuss which teachers to pick. Obviously, good teachers should be rewarded with full classrooms and bad teachers should have their classes underenrolled and cut. Anyways, thanks and good luck with the site.

Teacher Reviews was so true to live! Everything I looked up about my upcoming teachers was accurate. I think this website is great and I hope it comes back up.

Teacher Reviews was the best site I can't wait to see this side back. Please I want this site back by summer semester

Your website is the best tool to use while registering for classes. Our school starts to registering at the end of March, do u think that the site will be back up by then?

You're doing a great job and thank you for this website!

TeacherReviews should be back online by the end of March, but no promises.

#43 "Len"-

It's certianly not a gift, Len. You get paid fairly well. I know at City College professors get paid $70-$90 a unit (depending on experience). You figure a new full-time teacher will do 15 units, and get $75 an hour... that ends up being over 40k a year for a new teacher. That's good!

Further, my parents paid taxes, I pay taxes, my children will pay taxes... it isn't a gift. We pay taxes for a reason. I expect my government to give me this. If community colleges were a gift, I wouldn't have to pay $400 a semester on books, plus $270 a semester for tuition.

Finally, these reviews are not meant for teacher bashing. The truth is, there are bad teachers. Whether or not you can accept this depends on your open mindedness. Because my teacher was flaky, didn't agree with me politically, and didn't teach material well, I recieved a bad grade. Note that I am almost always a straight A student and in my other two semesters at CCSF I never recieved a C. This time I did. I wouldn't want this to happen again.

Instead of being angry for students reviewing their teachers, I think teachers should be more open to this and take the reviews as advice. How can the teacher make his or her class better?

#49:

Certainly, not certianly.

Received, not recieved.

I can never understand why students so readily disregard good grammar and spelling on teacherreviews - hardly makes one feel confident that they are taking their studies seriously.

Everybody: Certainly there are bad teachers at any school, just as there are bad students. The problem is that students tend to "bash" teachers they don't like and are NOT merely "critical". Bashing is NASTY and should be omitted from the site.

The full-time salaries at City College are not so bad, but part-time salaries are insulting, especially considering the lack of benefits and the need for part-timers to have 2-3 jobs. Last spring I worked for 3 institutions and made 12,000 for a 5 month period (took me an extra month to finish all the grading). Other schools are far worse - Peralta school teachers get beans - I once found they were offering about $3500 to teach a course there. San Jose State also offered low part-time salaries - about $3800 a course. You think that's fair pay for a doctoral degree and 15 years experience?

From #49 "The poorly written comments - poor grammar and spelling - and insulting comments - are a sad commentary about today's students who you say are "evaluating" the teachers."

Free speech is free speech, love it, or hate it. Consider that some of us students are smarter then other students (perhaps smarter then you even). Reviews, which have not been proofed, and are clearly just attacks, do not carry much weight with us. That is why there is an average score for teachers, to cancel out the extremists. Just because this is the internet, does not mean you have any right, nor should you have the ability, to control what is said about you. You cannot control what is said among students within your school, and you should not be able to control this. You want to prevent slander, be a better teacher, avoid alienating students to the point that they feel like posting slander. Beyond that, do not worry about the few loonies that post horrible reviews, we do not listen to them.

------------------------

Dylan, I think attaching replies to reviews is a good idea, and/or giving each review a rating by those that read it is fine. But no review (short of hateful off topic attacks, for example derogatory name-calling) should be removed; some one’s opinion about the teaching ability of the teacher should never be silenced, no matter who disagrees with that opinion or how radical it is. We will be able to separate the reasonable from the unreasonable.

I participated in creating a teacher review while in college in the mid 60's prior to computers. Ours was hand made so to speak which required us to review each review. Although I appreciate your work on this teacher review system I do understand why teachers might wish to file suit or in some other way complain about a review.

I was given an extraordinarily bad review by a student which

was not only inaccurate but also a personal attack. The student missed most of my class meetings, showed only for exams, refused to participate when in class and failed most of the exams. She graduated from her program only because I gave her a gift grade which was above and beyond what she earned.

The questions is: Does some method exist to prevent or eliminate reviews full of foul language, personal attacks on instructors, viscious in nature etc.?

Regarding number 48 and number 50

The wages for part time faculty at CCSF begin around $53 per hour and top out somewhere above $150 per hour. (If I remember accurately certain part time instructors can earn close to $180 per hour.)

The part-time wages at CCSF are the highest community college rates in the state of California.

However, it is true that a 15 hours of part-time teaching will not gnerate the same earnings as a full time instructor will generate teaching the same load. (There are a number of reasons for this differential, most of which are not accepted by the part-time teachers.)

Another interesting wage item to note is this. A full time instructor who teaches an overtime (part-time) class will earn a maximum of about $83 per hour compared to a maximum of $150 plus for a part-time instructor teaching the same course. In addition the part time instructor will move up the pay scale faster that the full time instructor will advance on the over time scale. The full time instructor gets no office hour pay and no benefits for the extra work while the part time instructor may qualify for both.

One last comment. The CCSF faculty AFT union is among the strongest in California and is dominated in leadership positions by part-time employees or full time employees who spent years as part timers prior to getting a full time positon. It is not accurate to say that part time instructors do not have representation. It is accurate to say that part time instructors had amazingly strong representation. In fact, the union has been able to get the chancellor to agree to complete parity pay when the money becomes available. After more than a year the committee working on this has not able to come up with the details of how this might be implemented.

From my experience at CCSF most of the dissatisfaction among part time instructors has not been about pay but about gaining full time employment which is a very difficult task when the college has 1500 plus part time instructors and 20 to 30 full time jobs available per year. I have never understood why anyone would want to take on a part time teaching positon as a career when virtually no opportunity for a full time position exists.

My advice, get a full time career position in an industry which will appreciate your skills and teach part time just in case a full time positon does fall into your lap. Otherwise you may be looking back in 30 years or so at 30 years of an unhappy part time career with no money to show for your years of PT work. Don't end up as a bitter old person living on medicaid in a rest home you don't think is up to your standars. Control your own destiny don't allow the lack of full time teaching jobs at CCSF control your destiny. Best wishes.

Hi there! I hope it will be up before June so I can pick my classes :-) I rely on this alot...it is very useful...I can't wait for it to be back. Take care!

your web site was sooooo accurate i chose all the teachers for fall'04 this way and i got great teachers...it was especially helpful 'cause my school is big and it was my first semester.THANKS!!!!!!!!

The preview of the new teacherreview looks great; however, can you put a view text only option for people who have slooow computers or something to accomodate that problem. thanks.

Please rebuild this web site since it is very helpful for students to choose good teachers. Thanks a lot!!!

Hurry up already! When will it be ready? I would do a quick summary on the professors I was getting for my classes. I enjoyed reading all the posts whether it was good or bad, I had fun. I took the bad with a grain of salt, everyone responds differently to everyone else. Get the site up and running already, we want content not pretty. Also, you should have the most recent posts first, to keep them in order. thanks and hurry up already!

I am a part-time teacher in the Bay Area, and I think I am paid plenty. I strongly support teacher review and I send my students to it as part of their homework assignments. I read the reviews here and use them to help me choose teachers for the classes I take. I have had both good and bad reviews here and I think that is as it should be.

I have flunked students for cheating, and I understand that some of the students are evil-hearted criminals and that they may abuse this system to take revenge on their teachers. But most of the reviews are fair and useful and the good done here far outweighs the harm done by a few bad apples. We cannot pretend that all teachers are good, or that all students are bad. The American system is to allow free speech, trusting the people to judge the quality of a person's arguments. I want this site to return as soon as possible, with as little censorship as possible. And if I see a note here saying that a teacher decided not to permit their reviews to be made visible, I will regard that as the most damning review of all.

Hey Dylan,

Site's really looking good. I can't wait for it to get back up, I have a couple of reviews saved in Word so I can paste them in. We discussed this in the past, and since you're revamping, I thought it would be a good time to bring up again. The University of Phoenix and the University of Phoenix ONLINE are two different schools. Could you possibly have them separated? Those of us in the online campus could change our profiles. What's happening is that there are a ton of teachers in the ground campus that I'll never see and vice versa. Just a thought.

Thanks,

Ric

Hi Dylan,

I just want to make a suggestion for your new website. What if professors have a choice of posting their syllabus or curriculm, so students can decide for themselves whether they want to take the teacher or not. Most students can't complain about the comments being deceiving because they saw the requirements of the professors ahead of time. In addition, this is a good way to weave out some of the slackers for the professors.

Hope you put this into consideration when building your new website.

-Liana-

Thank you so much for setting up this website, I find it so useful. I DO hope it will be back soon...it has always been very helpful. Thanks again.

#61 Lisa - Good news - I am adding that ability! Professors will be able to add links, text, and even photos.

#50, "Arthur"

Excuse my typos, however irrelivent they are to my point. The CCSF wages are extremely high, and that's not a bad thing. Sure, part time wages are low, but you don't only work part time. If you want food on your table, you work full time. Any part-time job pays peanuts.

Thank you Dylan for having provided this extremely helpful site free of charge to students in the past! Your service is very very valuable for students everywhere and is greatly appreciated and I'm so glad you're bringing the site back!!! Just hope that this newer version will be just as good or even better than the older version by continuing to list all honest reviews and not just the good ones, so that we can make appropriate decisions in choosing the right professors for our classes. Keep up the good work, we support you!

I didn't think the site could get any better, but you've really outdone yourself! It looks fantastic! I was wondering, however, if there was a date when we could see it all come alive (registration is right around the corner). :)

Hang tough!

Please try to get it up and running... I use this to sign up for classes... without this, im screwed!

I loved your old site and I'm sure I'll love your new site. Thanks for putting in all the extra time so we can enjoy it.

Thanks again,

hey man. I have to register in 2 weeks. PLEASE give me something to go with. I really don't care about updates, I just need the reviews! thanks

PLEASE HURRY!!! It looks wonderful, and I'm psyched that it is coming back. However registration is just around the corner and I can't pick classes w/o this awesome site!!!!

Thanks for all of your work!

yo great job but people will try to topple something good. keep your head up.

that's great news. your site is a great help, thanks for all the work.

I mean no disrespect because I love the site and what you have done for the community BUT it looks to me like you are unable to handle a full responsibility that comes with this project. That database belongs to students like me who put their time and effort in writing reviews and you are failing us by taking down the site indefinately possibly hirting many of us. Maybe a student organization with more resources and time should be handling the project or at least there should be mirrors to your site whose owners can take the heat and keep the site up. Thank you!

#73 Denis - I've been working on TeacherReviews every night and every weekend since the site went down. It will be back, but it's a lot of work and takes time to build a powerful Web site like TeacherReviews.

hey dylan,

thanks a lot for your efforts in trying to bring the site back better. I hope that you can bring real soon because i use it every single time i need to register. it is such a great help for students. don't forget about us. thanxs

The site looks great! I am so glad that you are deciding to bring it back up. I understand how much work it is, but do you have any idea when the site will be back up? I know my school is beginning to pick classes and MANY of us use your site for reference.

Hello Webmaster,

First, I wanted to thank you for all the time and hard work that you put into this site. Your hard work is greatly appreciated by all of us.

I also wanted to congrat you on the new look of the website because it looks very colorful, eye-catching and very original.

Do you know when is the site going back up? I don't to rush you or anything like that but summer registration is just right around the corner for many of us. Without access to the review, we would have to pick our classes blind-folded. Oh god... the thought of that just send a chill through my spine.

#77 - I'm working like crazy to get it back up but I don't have a date yet. My goal is end of March, but that is approaching faster than I want it to.

please put back teacher review asap, the summer session is comming!!! Thank you

Any idea when the site will be back up? Registration for the fall semester is approaching, so I hope you'll be back in business soon! Thanks!

Hey Dylan. It seems like you're working on the site by yourself. Maybe you should get some help so you don't have all the load on you.

I need to register in 10 days and need to know who (or not) to register with!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been using teacherreview for about 3 years now and I really rely on it to help me make decisions about taking classes, so first I wanted to say thank you for taking this project on. The only request I have of you is for you not to make it so that the website isn't to the point. I want to be able to do what I've always done but faster, without hella extra preamble about things I'm not interested in, that's what I liked about the site, that it was always get in and then out. Also, I'd like to say that I think it's great that you are opening up yourself to be contacted and asking for feedback I think it's a great way to go. Keep it up!!!!

PLEASE GET THE WEB SITE UP AND RUNNING. IT HAS SAVED MY LIFE IN THE PAST AND I NEED IT NOW :)

Just dropping by...and say HIIIIIIIIII ^_^

Hey, people, lay off on dylan already!! Can't you see he's already sold his soul to this project? I have classes to register for too and nightmares about bad profs, but there's only so much one guy can do, even if he's working 24/7. And if you get a not-so-great class, remember that, like anything else in this life, your attitude is often what will make or break the situation. Hang in there, Dylan, and know that we're all behind you 100%.

Oh no! What do I do when registering for my classes without this useful and wonderfully honest website!? I hope it's up and running soon...It's been so helpful in the past.

Thanks.

Thanks #86. I know class deciding time is coming soon. I am working as fast as I can.

The preview looks great and thanks for all the work you are putting into this. As hard as it was to register without teacher review i did manage and i just wanted to thank you for not giving up on the site. it got me through the middle years of school and i always tell freshmen about it. you are largely responsible for my college career not sucking and that fucking rocks =)

-Kerry

Dear God registration is coming! Think of the hell I'll go through if this site isn't back up by then! The long hours, the homework, the professor's bad attitude! :(

Dylan: Thanks for all of the hard work.

All who have to register shortly: Please give Dylan a break. If you want to know about your profs, go and talk to your peers. They should be able to give you the scoop.

n

Dylan: Keep up the good work! It's much apreciated by all the students I talk to about the site. We miss it, and can't wait to use it again.

Yep I really like this site a lot. I used it and it was SO USEFUL. Thank you so much, you have the thanks of many students across the nation

Dylan,

Thank you so much for working hard at this. I wish I know about this website sooner so I did not get an F for a class by a bad teacher name Habashi, Fouad at UOP. Please make this site up and running soon so you can save someone's life. I am looking for this record that I found from Google but the link doesn't work now. If anyone has any similar bad experience about this teacher Habashi, Fouad, please email me: mlinhm@yahoo.com

First of all I would like to thank you for providing this valuable resource for us students and also professors who use it to critique their teaching. However, I think that FIRST AND FORE MOST, this site is directed to use FOR STUDENTS, and while the wishes and rights of the professor should be considered it is important not to devalue this site because o f the complaints of one professor. After reading your post about TeacherReviews and its condition on February third I felt that the changes catered too much to professors. First, the ability for anyone to remove a post because it is "inappropriate" is something that could potentially be abused, for example, a professor might remove all negative reviews because they felt that they were “inappropriate” even though the post’s content was perfectly acceptable. Also if a student posts a review it is because they want other students to be able to know about a professor and by allowing professors to make their reviews private defeats this purpose.

While it may seem that I am attacking you for catering to professors please know that I respect your decision to take down and rebuild this site and the fact that you remove irrelevant, inappropriate reviews. I simply think that you should reconsider your “Instant Review Removal” and part of the “Easy professor removal” accommodations and maybe include, instead, a link that would allow professors and students to notify you of a post that they would like to have removed and have the ability to give an explanation or reason for why. This would also solve the problem of you having to read every one of the more than 36,000 post to find the inappropriate ones

Thank you very much and please continue with this great service.

dylan!! u are the ONE! u must save us or there is no hope. only the ONE can end the madness.

I know that this site is taking a while to get back up, but is there any way you could update us a little bit on what's going on, or maybe just put a watered down version of the site up?

At this point, classes need to be selected. Do you have to? Absolutely not, I realize you owe us nothing. I'm just saying, if you have the data, now is the time to share it, not May or June when none of us will need it anymore because our schedules will long ago be settled.

Just my .02

no college student can live without this site. (at least the smart ones).

Dylan,

A few friends of mine were speaking about doing the same thing for our university. The one the students are using is out of date. We have chosen to wait and possible endorse yours rather than reinvent the wheel. As I understand it, you are not doing this for profit and I applaud that. Have you considered opening source on this project. I am aware that this is a HUGE thing to undertake but passion is what make open source so good, mirrors could certanly help you out too. You can't unring a bell, opening the source would assure that it can never be repressed, even if this means that you will personally lose a good deal of the control. THis blog is ASP and I'm sure that there are enough ASP hacks/students who would be willing to contribute code to make it worthwhile. keep up the good cause. Just something to think about in the future (obviously not for the revition you are currently on.)

hurry

#97 - Kyle - yes I am planning a watered down version.

#99 - I may open source the project but not before the site is launched. It would be a huge undertaking to try to manage multiple people working on this, especially since nothing is documented - everything is in my head.

when is this site gonna be launched

I think it is an awesome thing you are doing. We need to hold professors accountable! Thank you for your efforts!

Its a good thing ur doing here Dylan. I hope its up soon I can't wait to see how its looks and I need it to pick summer classes. Thank you for ur hard work. Just speaking for some of the students I know, and myself we appreciate all ur hard work. Where is the pay pal donation link Dylan!!! We don't have much but we would like to show our support.

Please please try to get some type of working reviews up for the upcomming class signups.

Your website has helped me a lot in choosing my classes. I know you are really busy, but is it possible to have it up in the next couple of weeks. I have to choose my classes for next semester and it would be great to have this site as a guide. Thanks for your efforts and your new page is looking good.

ditto on what everyone else has been saying..this web site rocks!! and tried some of the other teacher review sites and they dont have near the same amount of teachers you guys have. I register soon and was wondering how long this will be..I know you said you dont really know but do you have an estimate?

Registration for me is April 16th, just letting you know, I would really love to be able to check out some teachers beforehand. Thanks for all your hard work.

Okay, would you mind *please* getting up the old teacher reviews in some form or another within the next two weeks or so? Because this is when we begin registering for classes for next Fall..at least here at UMBC. Thanks so much! ~UMBC's Jason Nappier

could you please please update the website so we could look at it and register there. And plus we would like to see the old reviews too. thank you very much and may god bless you.

Neville, Jason, Beavis, Emily, May, and everybody else - working on it, thanks for waiting! Will have more info soooooon.

Please, Please, Please, put this site back as soon as possible. We need this site, registrations are coming up in less then half a month. Please..... Just for a little bit util summer registration is over. Please it will help a lot You can put it back up from like now to begginging of May.

Thank You so so so so so much

teacherreviews saved my @ss (and my GPA) this semester. I'm looking forward to it being back as soon as possible. thank you Dylan Greene for the help in the past, and thanks for your dedication in getting it back! i truly appreciate you working so hard for our sake.

I need them now! I register in a week!

the begging is a little tacky everyone. It's a free service, he's risking litagation by doing it, he can't put the old site back up, cut the guy some slack. They say, "Good, fast, Cheap: pick two." Well, its free so you either have to choose fast or good, personaly, im willing to wait howeer long it takes.

I love teacherreview.com and have been using it since the day I found out about it and have been referring all of my friends to it as well. Thank you Dylan for taking your time and energy out to create this site for us the students (as well as the professors.) I can't wait for the new version to be up and running, even if it is a watered down version at first.

#116 code monkey - thank you for your understanding!

I personally have not had the pleasure in using teacherreviews.com, however, my friends rave about it. I am looking forward to trying it out when it comes back online.

on the note of the Google text ad, you should do whatever necessary to keep the site free of maintanence cost to you, as you've already invested so much time that can't be priced.

Good luck.

Thanks soo much for the time and effort that you put into this web-site! It is greatly appreciated and I cannot wait to see it up and running again. :)

hi, Dylan...

The summer registration has started. Are you going to post the teacherreviews back on?I'm dying to use it. Please post it ASAP...please....

Like many of the other posts, I would like to thank you Dylan

for all of the hard work you've done on creating and maintaining this site. I'd also like to add that I agree with code monkey...this is a free service and everyone needs to be more patient.

Take your time, do it right, and we'll help you celebrate, bro.

Hey, Dylan: Here's an idea on how to get this website up faster:

Call for help from the many computer science majors around the country. I'm sure many of them use the site and have some free time to contribute. Two or three persons will get the job done quicker and who wouldn't want such a famous site to be on their resume? I don't know what you would need to exactly organize it, but I'm sure it's possible to delegate certain parts of website to different people via email and phone.

. . .and all you computer science people out there, don't just sit there complaining and pleading for the site to come back -- OFFER HELP!

There has been at least one previous suggestion to help, but Dylan has refused, citing the complexity of the design.

Google text ads are the most unobtrusive form of advertising on the internet by far. I don't mind them at all - please use them if they will help support the site!

Stop worrying about the professors, we al have thr right to say whatever we want, this is America. So dont have secret reviews, isnt that missing the whole point of the review process?!?!?? And please dont go through with blocking professors names on google or whatever that process is.

I really do love this website, but I also have registration for classes like everyone else. Can anyone recommend a site that we can use until this one is back up?

ratemyprofessor.com is an alternative, I dont know if your school has stuff on it but mine does, hope that helps

This was an awesome site!!! I cannot wait for it to come back and with all the great feedback, I'm sure the site is going to be better than ever!

Although I only had a few chances to use the website while it was up... Through the few semesters because of this site, I had the opportunity to attend classes with a few great professors there are at CSM. I was lookng forward to using it when I transfer, so hopefully the site will be back up.

Best of luck to you!

I WAS WONDERING IF YOUR SITE WAS GOING TO BE UP BY APRIL 16. PLEASE EMAIL ME BACK AT CAROLINAGIRL5353@AOL.COM

THANKS!

Dude your website rules, thanks alot for all the work you've done. Just hope your done with it by next week because I got summer reg. coming up, wish you the best and thanks for the best website out there. peace

I'm dying here without this site up. I hate going in blind to a course, knowing nothing about the professor.

I just wanted to say that I think it's really stupid that a teacher is threating you to take down the site. As students, we have to PAY (& IT'S NOT CHEAP EITHER) to take a class with these teachers, so in a way we are consumers of education!!! As a person who is paying for something we should have the right to know about other's comments about that particular thing we're paying for. I have noticed teachers seem to change their tolerance level after the Withdrawal period, and I've had teachers who say one thing in the beginning of the semester, but changed their mind much later on. We should be able to be warned whether or not the teacher is that kind of person so we do not waste our time, money, and lower our chance of transferring! Just like we can look rate a hotel by stars, read comments about apartment buildings, read about certain cars and how they run, we should be able to know about the teachers we'll be taking. After all, isn't education supposedly a top priority? If it is, then why should be be barred from information pertaining something of great importance. Teachers can post things onto the site themselves rights? Besides that, I've seen teachers post an introduction message of some sort directly on the link of their name. We all know that we are getting comments from certain people and there experiences with the teachers may be different from ours, but that is something we should decide ourselves. The decision is the student's after all whether to take the teacher or not, just as if we were to browse around for a car, hotel, or apartment buildings, and we should not be barred from such information.

#124: Help from compsci students would be nice, but I don't want to spend time being a manager for team. In the end it would take longer than just doing this myself. There's not much left to be done, it's just lots of little things like security features and letting you change your email address and password that must be in place before the site can launch.

I will need a graphic artist eventually to help make a logo, and some people with better grammar and spelling skills to proof-read text on the site, but that will come after the site launches.

I work at a Peer Mentoring program at City College of San Francisco and we use your site every day to help students pick their classes. Please get it back up ASAP and if the teacher gives you any drama, we got your back!

Man, I count on this site!! I appreciate all the work you've put into it. I find it humorous that the professor who was accused of being "paranoid" is acting a little paranoid.

I just want to say I appreciate the time and effort you have put into this website to make it exist. It's a really helpful website and your new ideas sound good. Seems like some good improvements are on its way.

PLEASE HURRY.

I'm regustering for summer classes at SFSU today, and without your site I'm f__ked!!!!!!!!!

Please come back.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

any word on how much longer it may be?

This website is supposed to be used by students at the college level, meaning that we are ADULTS. For those who want to act like lazy pieces of poo and ruin it for the rest of us, well thanks alot. FOr those who didnt get along with thier teacher because they (the student) were lazy and didnt do theyre work resulting in a bad grade, this is not the site for you. I use this site to help me find a teacher that work best with my learning style, and now I have no idea about any of the teachers i am looking at. SO thank you all you lazy losers who have no life but to talk trash about your teachers. Youre wasting you money and time going to school to bitch and moan about it. THIS SITE ROCKS!!!!!!!!!! LETS GET IT GOING AGAIN!!!

Teacherreviews.com is the best site for looking up professors, but while it is being revamped students can go to www.ratemyprofessors.com It has CCSF on there

How much $ do I need to donate to be able to preview teacher review when it comes back?

#144 - Whatever you feel shows your support for the site.

Hi,nice people! Would you please tell me which professor is good(and not too hard)for summer class MGMT407@SFSU? ~JoJo

Anybody know if Chathoth is a good Finance 350 teacher at SFSU?

#146 mgmt is a fairly difficult class to take in summer school. I took Dopp in summer school, and it was really hard. If you want to learn a lot and work really hard, take him. otherwise look for an easier teacher. the class even had study group daily on top of class, which Dopp attended. It was still difficult! good luck

has anyone heard of GE for Bus 690 at SFSU?

or Proball for Mktg 649?

Hey, I heard that Desta is a good teacher, especially for Summer.

When will the web site come back on line? This is a very usefull web site.

please dont turn this comments section into a forum for people trying to find out if they signed up for "good" teachers

Is Ericson an okay teacher to take for Management 407 at SFSU?

I was loving this site, it truly performs an excellent service...sure you have to take it with a grain of salt, but it's free speech at it's finest, too. Thanks for all your hard work getting this site up, and bringing it back soon.

I simply think you should get the site going again.......its was a magnificent idea from the beginning and it has grown it to world known and we really need it .......Now!.....Please

04/24/2004 12:20am

I thought the website was coming back this weekend? what happened? well thanks anyway for all the work you've done and all the help you've provided to many students

Thanks for the long time service, but my success relies on your information and I am in some serious need of it now. I hope your not going to privatize the site and make people pay even though we probably should. If you do start charging for services wouldn't that solve your problem? Even though you are clearly not violating any laws I think that private companies/organizations can say whatever the hell they want. In any case, hope you get things up and running again.

so will teacherreview still be a free web site?

Thank you for spending so much of your time creating and tweeking this website. I have found it very useful in the past and cannot wait until it is up again to use.

I think google ads will be fine as long as they are put off to the side and those are the only ads you have.

i just paid via paypal, when am i going to get the access, i mean able to see the site? please reply as me as soon as possible.

Neville - the email sometimes takes a little while because I still send them out manually.

I've put a FAQ on http://www.TeacherReviews.com - more up-to-date information is there now.
