It's about time you updated your Office
January 27, 2004 3:18 PM
Hey - do you use Word, PowerPoint, Excel, or Outlook? Then do yourself a huge favor: Go visit OfficeUpdate now.
OfficeUpdate will make sure you have all of the latest patches for whatever version of Office you are using. I know it supports Office XP and Office 2003. I'm not sure if it supports Office 97, 98, or 2000, but you should still visit to get the patches you need. WindowsUpdate, which you should also be using to make sure you have the latest patches for Windows, unfortunately does not have the updates you need for Office.
In addition to helping protect you from the latest email trojens and viruses, the Office Updates also fixes problems that could cause Office programs to crash. Office Update is free and easy to use. It doesn't even make you restart Windows when it's done.
So instead of swearing at Microsoft next time your Office crashes or you get another email virus, do something about it now, because chances are Microsoft released a patch for the problem months ago and you just haven't installed it yet.

Be sure to have your original Office CDs handy. The updates won't install without it. Don't have your original CDs? Sucks to be you.
Posted January 27, 2004 6:21 PM
Actually, the updates installed without CDs for me. However, I did have issues. Word update installed fine the normal way, but the other two failed. I had to download the full Admin install for the general Office and Outlook Junk Mail Filter Update patches. Nothing is ever easy.

I also had to d'load the full admin install for the Word and Excel updates even though I had the disks.

Posted January 27, 2004 11:37 PM
I downloaded the full admin install and it still asked me for the original disks looking for "SKU011.CAB". Where did I put those OpenOffice cds again?

Awesome Rob - it's awesome when Microsoft developers are posting items like what you posted. It helps us non-Microsoft employees realize that: A) We aren't going insane when we run into these sorts of problems, and B) You are human too.

I recently had to perform an image restore on my windows 2000 partition, and my backed up image was from a fresh win2k installation with many CDs already installed. The first time I actually try to run Office (Word) from a regular user account, it complained that it needed to install things. I can't remember if it couldn't find a file there, but I attempted to Repare (Detect and Fix Errors only) from Administrator. And from there, it was complaining that it couldn't find a required installation file SKU011.CAB.
I was glad I still had all my installation files in a nice directory structure on another partition, which did have SKU011.CAB. But I explicitly told it where the file was and it still complained.I read this blog, and realized that the path to my installation files may have changed a drive letter, but I first tried something else. My NTFS C Drive had security set up for Full Control to Administrator, and smaller read access to Everyone. I changed my Full Control to the group Administrators, and suddenly the install went fine. (Note, the SKU011.CAB and the entire partition that it was on had Full Control already to the group Administrators and Everyone, and so the problem was not that the file could not be read.) I suppose a more descripitive error could have been that it didn't have access to write to the drive, instead of that it couldn't find the file. Was the install running as a different user? Other than Administrator, but still in the group Administrators?

I have the same problem, and i tried to download sku011.cab but failed.I'm a layman. How to change my Full Control to the group Administrators?Who can tell me how to solve this problem step by step?

Hello, I just upgraded, installing the latest "office" and I too experienced problems.. at first it started when my "access" was asking for "sku011.cab", and thinking that I had done something wrong, I re-installed "office" and this time it asked to "upgrade" from website, and then asked for the original disk, (which was still in my drive) now my problems started to get worse, it keeps rebooting my system (at least 30 times in 2 days) .... any one for linux???
I went to ftp://61.138.6.199/office2003/PRO/SKU011.CAB and it tells me that this file is corrupted, and then I tried ftp://61.128.210.134/office2003/SKU011.CAB and nothing is there.. a look at google shows at least 60 others with the same problem..
here is another place to try: http://202.105.138.158:8080/downloads/sc_office_2003_pro.iso
I have not tried this yet..

Just a note to say that if any of you are in need of downloading SKU011.cab, use eDonkey (for those that dont know it, www.edonkey.com) it has about 10 different versions of the file but most of them are fully working.
APosted March 10, 2004 8:29 AM
Or use kazaa (www.kazaa.com), there is a good version on there too
http://www.DylanGreene.com
Posted March 10, 2004 12:54 PM
Andy - Bad! Don't use Kazaa - full of spyware and adware. Will slow your machine down, make it insecure, and can lead to programs like IE crashing.
Posted March 10, 2004 2:05 PM
Technically yes, but when you deconstruct the code and build you own, you get all the features you need without any of the crap that you dont. Alternatively use Adaware6, best spyware remover ive ever come across. . .
Posted March 11, 2004 11:10 AM
Any other sites to download sku011.cab?
Posted March 15, 2004 11:13 AM
Dylan, ever hear of kazaa lite! No adware or spyware!!!
http://www.DylanGreene.com
Posted March 15, 2004 2:30 PM
#18 - Kazaa Lite doesn't come with any but your system can still get the spyware/adware through Kazaa's updates/upgrades.

about the SKU011.CAB file, is in the root of Office 2003 CD1, just unhide system files and folders, It works for me.
Posted April 13, 2004 1:32 AM
Just a note for anyone else trying to solve this problem for Office 2003 on Windows XP -- I occasionally play around with the services on my machine, disabling those that seem to be sucking up memory for no particular good reason. I was also experiencing the SKU011.CAB problem: I couldn't start Excel, and when it prompted me for the Office installation disc, it wasn't able to find the file, even though I could locate it myself in Windows Explorer. Turns out that one of those services I stopped, called "Office Source Engine", must have been the cause. I just quit out of all my installation/repair dialogs to get back to the desktop, started that service, and was instantly able to open Excel with no problems. Perhaps this is the case with someone else.

i couldnt f'n agree more.
Posted April 19, 2004 3:35 PM
I just got off the phone with Microsoft on this problem. It has not been documented yet for the Knowledge Base.
We were able to get Office Update to run without the SKU011.CAB problem by first doing a repair of the Office Install. I was having the same trouble running either Office Update or when I tried to add components to Office 2003.

help me !trouble with SKU011.CAB
Posted June 24, 2004 7:03 AM
I had a problem with SKU011.CAB on 2 Dell Optiplex pc's: one has a problem with the installation of Office XP 2003 and no programmes will open; the other has a problem with Excel that came as a direct result of trying to install a Microsoft Office Update (there had been no problems with Excel before). When I try to run Excel, it shows the usual screens ('Preparing to install', 'Please wait while Windows configures.../Gathering required info...', Installation Error: File not found...').
One site suggested the problem was with the MSOCache folder, and recommended copying the MSOCache folder from another pc. I looked on another of my pc's and it had more files in the folder (my folder was about 8MB, the other about 17MB) - including SKU011.CAB - so I copied it onto my hard drive.
I tried to run the install of Excel again, it couldn't find SKU011.CAB in the correct sub-folder of MSOCache, so I copied the SKU011.CAB file to the Desktop, tried it again, and it now found it. BUT! It's now looking for E2561410.CAB, which I can't find on any pc. When I search for it on Google, only one website contains it, but the link's broken now.
So, still stuck! And all cos my IT company lost my Office discs.

Can someone explain in detail and english how to fix this problem with sku011.cab. I'm not the most computer literate and I don't have the original CD's. I can find the file and what seems to be sku011 but the installation still says unable to find.. Do I have to copy/paste this file somewhere?
Posted July 19, 2004 5:36 AM
Indeed, SKU011.CAB must be available on the folder C:\MSOCache\All Users\9000040c-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9. Then you just have to run the set up file Office2003-kb828041-client-enu.exe.

Posted September 5, 2004 7:58 PM
First of all, I would like to make mi apologies to those who did not manage to fix the problem thanks to my solution (53 to 54).
The problem, then, may be a security issue (see http://www.mcse.ms/message436198.html). Here, as a summary, the fellow explains that "The security settings on (his)
C-drive prevents (him) from creating new directories in the root directory, andthe installer apparently wanted to create C:\MSOCache. So if you don't havethis directory and can't create it yourself you cannot patch Office 2003."So maybe everyone still having a trouble with this damned file may check this out.
From my part, everything is solved since I applied the patch...

Marcio in #22 had the solution that worked for me. Go into Registry Editor (Start, Run, "regedit"). Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, Software, Microsoft, Office, 11.0, Delivery. There should be only 1 directory under Delivery, which is your DownloadCode (mine was 90000409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9). Select that directory. On the right side of the screen, right-click on CDCache. Change the value to 0. This worked for me, but be very careful anytime you edit the system registry. Thanks for the great advice on this board.

Well, I was having the same problem (stupid Microsoft), I implemented the solution from #69, it seemed to work, but I found that Windows Installer required another set up file, the same one from #44. I searched google for that, and found this website that saved me. It has a list of CAB files that Office might ask for. You can download them individually or have a zip file of all the CABs. One question - should I change CDCache back to 2?? Or leave it. Will it have any future effect on other things?

Posted January 16, 2005 2:22 AM
ok ...here's the deal...everything on my comp until i gotevidence eliminator v5.0 and apparently it somehow uninstalled my Office 2003 Pro and deleted sku011.cab ...i used #69's famed method and now it is asking me in the instillation for file D:\MSOcache\AllUsers\90000409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9\YT561401.CAB--it gives me an error and asks to verify if the file exists and asks to retry. My comp was runnin so smooth..i think i really might have screwed it up...its runnin kinda slow now...has anyone ever heard of EEv5.0 and wether or not some pirated versions can screw things up....i would appreciate some input....i am a definite layman.....i'm really lost....Thanks

Thanks for the great advice on this board.
tried this but now i get mso cache is not a valid folder i am using windows xp service pack2

108 i have the same problem just go back into the registry a change the 0 back to 2 i'm guessing that was the number you had.
It puts your back to how it was before you get that messageMSOcache\AllUsers\90000409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9\YT561401.CABPosted January 19, 2005 3:45 AM

As with practically everyone else, #69 worked for me, but to successfully install SP1, I had to use the 'fullfile" version (73 mb), not the 18 mb (client) version. Thanks again for all the assistance.

Thank you so much guys. Now not only my girlfriend loves #69. I bow to thee.
Oh, and for the person with the start button issue, right click on your start button, go to properties and choose the "start menu" option, insted of "classic start menu." Hope it helps.
Peace and carrots...

Well you guys , i'm so pleased for you - honest!!
But I am about to throw this notebook out tha window:
if I try (69)'s method I get as far as 11.0 but I don't get the Delivery sub-directory -
instead I get Common\InstallRoot and VerboseSetupLogging
There is a Delivery sub-directory that is subbed to Office, rather than 11.0 - but this does not have the parts (69) stated - no directory, no download code that is obvious. No CDCACHE, doesn't respond to right-click in terms of value options.
HELP HELP HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I consider my self very computer literate. I have an over priced master degree, IQ above 130 and I was so frustrated by this mess I threw my 400.00 palm in the pool, felt like an idiot (because I was acing like one) and surfed a while. I some how (thankfully) stumbled here via a google trip from some where else. And #69 worled for me also! Almost as good as phonics I might add! LOL!
Each time I tried to open Excell iot would say please get your cd for this file. i HAVE THE CD, but it was not on there. I have the product key code , no go! All of this from an update! I am scared to death to go back. Should I now that this works or what? Has anyone went back to the upate and tried it. i apologize if it is posted here, i stopped reading after everyone simply was thanking #69! Well, best i can tell his name is Marco from Brasil and REInvestor put it laymen terms for us all to enjoy. I do not like to mess with CAB files and the regisrty, bad experience once before but this was pretty safe.
Well, some one let me know if they ventured back to the update and installed it. This is how mine went kapoot. After doing a MS update for office 03.
I love my outlook now I can use it ASLO!
Go Brasil and GO Investor!

Nikko's methods works for me.
After changing the reg, I'm asked for another cab, called m4561421.cab, I found it on google. Below is the URL for dowload:http://219.141.36.146/soft/of2003/OFFICE11/Thanks to Nikko again.

i understand #69 info but for some reason i have 4 directories under deliveries i changed all 4 to 0 but then i got error message 1131 what ever the h**l so if anyone can answer this one please e-mail me or post it
thanks alot now this is for all my office 2003 programs,Posted March 14, 2005 9:23 PM
I also tried copying the necessary CAB file in the directory instructed...no go.
I tried to do #69 but I don't have that variable in my directory. I used to slam Mac users but since upgrading to XP I have to admit Bill Gates is one amazing person....being able to convince millions that his software is worth using....what's that saying???? "Who's more the fool....the fool who led you here of the the fools who followed?".
FYI I upgraded my BIOS in the hopes that it would improve my peformance and it did. Just wish software developers could produce a simple software even an unedumacated feller like me could use.

thanks #22 for the great idea, and #69 for the right way you explain the path to reach CDCache! And even one year later, what you advise us to do is still working!!...but i still have one question: Why do we have to go into the system registry to solve that problem??...just to understand a bit how does it work!
thanks!

I have the CD's for MIcrosoft Office Professional Edition and it still doesn't find SKU011.CAB. Most of the files on the CD are zipped. When I unzip, I get a "Shitload" of files. I have just given up updating my Office 2003 software and run it the way it is. Excel is the product that get screwed up.

Nikko's file almost worked for me, but I have got the professional edition and it seems that it is the wrong SKU011.cab file for this edition. Is there anywhere else I can find this?

Thank you #164... was struggling with the #22/#69 solution until I loaded the IJ561401.CAB file into the msoChace/All Users/90000409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9 directory. The URL you gave had this file and it worked great. The trick was to load both the sku011.cab and IJ561401.cab files into the same directory. Otherwise, the sku011.cab file kept on deleting upon each attempt. Everything back to normal now... Whew!
