Fix for MSN Messenger 6.1 Sign On Problems
December 8, 2003 1:05 PM
A new version of MSN Messenger 6.1 was released (6.1.0203), and some people are no longer able to log in. Here's how to fix this silly little problem: Go to File, Choose "Sign In..." (the one without your email address). Put your passport email address and password in. Sign in. That's it.
I think with this new version they changed how passwords are stored when you use "Allow automatic sign in when connected to the Internet" and this changes the saved password.

My MSN wont sign in at all. Both Windows messenger as well as MSN messenger give me the same "sorry, we could not sign you in because the sign in name does not exist or the password you entered does not exist." I know i have the correct password and i was able to use it just the nite before. I also have 3 other accounts and the same goes for all of them. I cannot log on to hotmail from internet explorer as well as it gives me a error page "cannot find site you were looking for" and i cant create a new account either, because when i click the tab to create a new account, the same thing happens, error page. Can some one pleeeeeeeeease help me :(

get Trillian, http://www.trillian.cc , freeware prog that works with ICQ, MSN, Y! and AIM. Works fine with MSN if you're having trouble with the normal MSN prog, but doesnt have as many features as MSN does. Worth it if you wanna go on MSN though! :)

SOLUTION FOR INSTALLATION PROBLEMS
MAKE SURE U CLOSE ALL THE PROGRAMS IN THE TASK BAR. (INCLUDING AD-AWARE AND POPUP STOPPERS)
TO CORRECT WINDOWS INSTALLER DO THIS:
WIN 2000 OR XPclick Start, Run, and then "copy" and "paste" the following command into the box:%systemroot%\system32\dllcache\msiexec.exe /regserver(DON'T FORGET THE "SPACE" BETWEEN msiexec.exe and /regserver)WIN 98 OR ME
click Start, Run, and then "copy" and "paste" the following command into the box:C:\Windows\System\msiexec.exe /regserver(Don't forget the "SPACE" between msiexec.exe and /regserver)(You will need to change the C:\ to whichever drive Windows is on)IF UR RUNNING WIN XP OR 2000 MAKE SURE UR WINDOWS INSTALLER SERVICE IS RUNNING. Heres how to check:
Start --> Settings --> Control Panel, Click on Administrative tools, then find and click on Services..Then look for Windows Installer, which will be way down the list as it's in Alphabetical Order.Make sure the service is running, if not, RIGHT click on it and choose Start, you might also want to change it to start Automatically to avoid problems like this in the future.MSN6 Keeps freezing when I sign in, or just after I sign in.
(This fix will also usually work if you cannot sign in at all.)1.Exit MSN Messenger Program completely
2.Click on Start, then Run, type: "regedit" (Without Quotes) 3.Navigate to MyComputer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger 4.Click the MSN Messenger Key (Click Once). Go to the Edit menu and select Delete 5.Delete the MSN Messenger folder from c:\Program Files (Replace C: with your system disk if it is something other than C) 6.Install MSN MESSENGERWhile Installing, I encounter Error 1603 - and the installation fails.
1.Navigate to your System folder, usually c:\WINDOWS or c:\WinNT 2.Enter the WinSxS folder 3.You should see a folder called InstallTemp, rename it to InstallTemp2 4.Find the file x86_Microsoft.Windows.Networking.Dxmrtp_6595b64144ccf1df_5.2.0.4868_x-ww_212f7d9e AND RENAME IT TO THIS:x86_Microsoft.Windows.Networking.Dxmrtp_6595b64144ccf1df_5.2.0.4868_x-ww_212f7d9e25.Now install MSN MESSENGERSIGN IN SOLUTIONZZZZZ!!!!!WINDOWS 98,ME
1) Click Start > Run
2) Type: %windir% and press enter.3) Open Application Data and then the Microsoft folder.4) Right-click the MSN Messenger folder and delete it.Note: if you're using Profiles with Windows 98/ME, you'll need to go to the Profiles folder, choose your username and then go to the Application Data folder (then continue with the same
process). If you don't know if you have Profiles setup, most likely you do not (if you don't have Profiles folder in the Windows folder, then you aren't).Now restart MSN Messenger and try to sign in again...
WINDOWS 2000, XP
1) Click Start > Run
2) Type: %appdata%\Microsoft and press enter.3) Right-click the MSN Messenger folder and delete it.Now restart MSN Messenger and try to sign in again...
FIXESVERY FIRST ONEClick Start, then Run, and enter the following:
regsvr32 softpub.dllthen click OK(DONT FORGET THE "SPACE" BETWEEN regsvr32 and softpub.dll)1. The date on your computer needs to be set properly -- double click theclock verify that the time and date are set.2. If your password information is not saved, verify that you are typing itin with the correct case (uppercase or lowercase).3. Change your password @ http://memberservicesnet.passport.com/memberservice.srf tosomething smaller (under 10-12 characters), then try signing in again.4. If you use a firewall (like ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security etc. ),it's possible that Messenger doesn't have the correct rights to access the Internet, especially since you upgraded. You may need to re/add Messenger to the allowed list of programsin your firewall if this is the case.5. If you disabled your firewall in the past, it still may be blockingMessenger -- try restarting it and see if that helps the situation. You also might tryuninstalling an installed firewall, to verify that it isn't causing a problem (even if it isdisabled).6. Clear your IE cache and cookies -- open Internet Explorer, click theTools menu, then Internet Options, then click the Delete Files button, and when that'scomplete click the Delete Cookies button.7. Check your IE Security settings -- open Internet Explorer, click theTools menu, then Internet Options, then Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section, andverify that "Check for server certificate revocation" is unchecked. Also verify that 'Use SSL2.0' and Use SSL 3.0' is checked, then click OK.----
Prevent Windows Messenger from automatically running(sumtimes it might say u are signed in from another location cuz windows messenger is running wen ur running msn messenger)TO FIX THIS U HAVE TO STOP WINDOWS MESSENGER FROM RUNNING.TO DISABLE WINDOWS MESSENGER FROM LOADING:
Windows XP Home
Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel Click Performance and Maintenance Click Administrative Tools Double click Services Scroll down and highlight "Messenger" Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties. Click the STOP button. Select Disable in the Startup Type scroll bar Click OK Windows XP ProfessionalClick Start->Settings ->Control Panel Click Administrative Tools Click Services Double click Services Scroll down and highlight "Messenger" Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties. Click the STOP button. Select Disable in the Startup Type scroll bar Click OKPosted February 6, 2004 2:59 AM

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to add another solution. I tried to get my MSN MSGR to work after receiving the same error 0x81000310 using all the suggestions posted above. In the end what I got to work is when i went into outlook (XP)and went into sign on there, it popped right up.Posted February 26, 2004 9:41 AM
there is a solution up above that works.
you may want to read it. # 31 I think??also.. check for a newnet*.dll if you are running any kind of spyware removal applicaiton, it could screw you accidently.Posted February 29, 2004 12:10 AM

I don't know about anyone else but I uninstalled the "new" 6.1 version and reinstalled the last version I previously had and since then I have had NO more problems, when MSN finally gets their act together and fixes the "new" version maybe I'll try it again, by the way I reinstalled the older version from the CD that installs MSN 9 dial up software.
Posted March 15, 2004 8:28 PM
Ok i had all the above problems, i installed about 6 differnt versions of Messenger, and still the same problem, wont login, or tells me to check my internet connection.
I did the tips above, enterng regetid, ect, un-installing 1 verion after the other, from V5 to V6.1, and still no luck.
I was about to give up and turn the computer off, untill i remembered the last day i was able to login with at least one of my Messenger account.
1 of my accounts wont work whats so ever, i have 5 messenger account, the other 4 now work.. how did i do it.
OK here it is, Easy as pie.. Do a system restore with XP, not sure with 98/Me, or 95, i have XP Pro, I did a system restore for 2 days eairlyer, ie, set back to 14th Martch 2004, and when the syste mrestored itself i tryed all 6 accounts. 1 still dont work, the other 5 worked..
Oh DONT install any new System updates, as this may screw up messenger again.
Try it, if it worked for me, it should work for you. Just hope Microsoft will pull there fingers out the A$$es and get a decent working version of messenger soon.
Good Luck..Let me know if it works for you system restore.
Email me: firefox2a:hotmail.com This is my Email & messenger and in on messenger now.

My msn 6.1 was working fine....and then one day I turned on the computer and the icon wasn't there...I tried signing in through the start menu, but as soon as it signs on, it disconnects me. The icon in the task bar does not disapear (even after I am disconnected) until I move the cursor over it. My msn 6.0 works fine, however and this is what I have been using. I would very much like to have 6.1 working again. If anyone can help, my addy is alyeska@sasktel.net.

Maybe this helps some of you ???
I've been having the same problems for days. Couldn't sign in to msn messager 6.1, couldn't login to hotmail and even the Windows update page gave an error when I scanned for updates !!!I also had norton internet security( for months already, no problems at all ). I found out that deinstalling norton internet security solved all my problems at once. For the ones that have norton internet security: When I tried to uninstall it said I couldn't because I wasn't logged in as a supervisor. The solution was to go to the symantec website and download their manual uninstall program !!!! After that my problems were over !!!

ello people i think this mite resolve the problem with the 301 error thing:
If you are running Windows 2000 make certain all the latest updates are installed as well as the latest Direct X. Windows 2000 does not support Universal Plug & Play but Direct X will help as it contains some UPNP code.
Ensure that the people you are connecting to have done the same steps where applicable. Then you can re-test the MSN Messenger functionality.
If you are running Windows XP make certain that you have QoS disabled. This is known to cause problems with Messenger's audio and may cause other problems.
Turning off the QoS Packet Scheduler.
To do this:
In Windows, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Network and Internet Connection, and then click Network Connections. Right-click the network or Internet connection that is currently enabled, and then click Properties. Clear the QoS Packet Scheduler check box. Restart your computer. Sign in to MSN Messenger and try again.Posted March 20, 2004 3:25 PM
I had the "Sorry, we could not sign you in becaue the sign-in name you entered does not exist or your password is incorrect. If you have forgotten your password, please click 'Help'in the main Messenger window, and then click 'Help Topics' for instructions on resetting your password. 0x81000303" problem and was using zone alarm so i figured it was that and disabled it. But after that it didnt chane but when i reenabled zonealarm and it asked me if i wanted messenger to acsess the net i said yes and hey presto it works again. i think that if zone alarm is installed and disabled it still affects your conection so renable your firewall. it worked for me.

I cannot sign on to my msn at all. I have a network and the other computers can sign on except mine! I get no warning, all that happens is I try to sign in, type my password and it goes for maybe half a second, then I'm back at the regular screen again. There is still the little cursor that acts as if it's loading something, but only when it put it over MSN messenger.

Yesterday I went to MY MSN and did a search for a map. A blue page came up said that it couldn't find what I was looking for did I want to search for something else. NO, I clicked on the MY MSN at the top and I couldn't get out of that page. So I close it and went to my shortcut to open it again and the bottome line I am still stuck on that page. Luckily I had bookmarked a communities site or I couldn't get into my groups. I can get into my Hotmail just fine.
Then last night I updated my messenger. I had a little white square icon with a blue stripe on it and when I clicked on it is said there was no parameter. So I couldn't open Messenger. Today I was trying to follow what everyone was saying about the problems. I finally went to Start Programs and opened Messenger from there. Signed in and everything seems to work fine. So I put a shortcut on my desktop and drug it to my taskbar. Then right clicked on that square icon and deleted it. I know that was too simple but that is what worked for me. Now if I could get into MY MSN I would be all set.........JanetPosted March 22, 2004 4:26 PM
OK, basically, my MSN is fcked. I can't sign in, as it just gives me a "We are unable to sign you in to the .NET Messenger Service, possibly because of a problem with your Internet connection. Please try again later. 0x081000370" error.
I've searched high and low all over the internet, and tried every single fix I can find. Nothing has worked.
If anyone has anything that might work, please reply!!
Posted March 22, 2004 5:30 PM
I had the error 0x81000365 preventing me from signing in coz of Norton anti virus. Go into norton internet security NOT the ordinary norton anti virus. Click on personal firewall and then configure. Go into the tab along the top programs. The scroll down the list until you get to Microsoft MSN Messenger and its likely it says "block all" change this setting to suit you, for example "permit all" or "automatic".

if your having problems with msn messanger 6.1 signing in with windows 2000 because it says error "we are unable to sign you into net messanger services. possible because of a problem with the server or your internet connection.make sure your connected to the internet.0x81000310" The fix to get rid of this is to do this ....1.Exit MSN Messenger Program completely
2.Click on Start, then Run, type: "regedit" (Without Quotes)
3.Navigate to MyComputer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger
4.Click the MSN Messenger Key (Click Once). Go to the Edit menu and select Delete
5.Exit your regedit and goto your msn again and start it up and sign in... it should work again!

by da way how do u get to this zone alarm thing
Posted March 25, 2004 8:03 AM
I have gotten the same issue several times al #123 . Things I have tried include if u try this it mite help not sure though
1. Rebooting my internet equipment(Cable Modem, Linksys Router, Comptuer)
2. Signed into hotmail account and then tried messenger (it worked after doing this, coincodence?)I have talked with people who were having difficulties getting to any MSN, or Hotmail websites. After discussing it with them we came to the conclusion to try changing the cable modem out. This corrected their issue. I have no idea if this will work with DSL equipment or not, but I have heard of DSL customers having the same sort of issue. I don't know if some kind of routing table gets set in the modem and it screws it up I don't know but if you can't get to MSN or Hotmail and you've tried everything try getting a different broadband modem or bypassing your internet router.
Hope this helps

just to add to #126s comment, i had error 0x81000301 after installing MSN messenger 6.1 too. I had swiched zonealarm (personal firewall) off, but it must have been running in the background and not allowing MSN because it wasnt recognised on it's program list. I switched ZA on properly, tried to run MSN and, hey presto! a "do you want to allow msn to connect?" ZA dialog popped up. I clicked "yes (always allow)" and everything is fine.

For those folks having problems with the error "It appears as though you are behind a firewall" please take these steps:
Go to Internet options (Tools...Internet Options).... Click on "Security" tab... Click on the Internet icon... Click on Custom Level... Now, scroll all the way down to "UserAuthentication." I think you'll find that the authentication has been changed to "Intranet only". Click on "Automatic logon with current usernameand password," Restart MSN Messenger.http://me@me.co.uk

Bigger problem here. My msn just doesn't run period. I open the program, the hour glass shows up which suggest the program must be running, and nothing happens. I checked the registry under RUN and sure enough, I get "C:\PROGRAM FILES\MSN MESSENGER\MSNMSGR.EXE" /background. So what gives?

problem could happen bcz of back door bugs that get downloaded and change your internet setting.
Simply, open your IE (Internet Explorer), Click on "Tools" on the menu bar. Click "Internet Options". Select "Advanced" Tab.Click "Restore Defaults". This would fix "0x81000301 " problem. At this point, you have your IE options back to default. Let me know (faisal_salam@hotmail.com) if still doesn't work, which I doubtFaisalhttp://wavs

1) If you're using a third-party firewall (Sygate, ZoneAlarm, Norton, etc.)set Messenger to "Permit All" or "Allow" type options in the firewall configuration.2) If you're using a router, make sure you have the latest firmware fromyour router manufacturer. As well, you might try setting your computers local IP intothe routers DMZ setting (see documentation on how to do this).3) If you see the disconnection problem on a corporate network, the networkmay be timing out your settings -- in this case, you might want to ask your systemadministrator to adjust the corporate internet sharing solution/firewall (if possible).4) Finally, this can also happen due to a lack of bandwidth. If you haveKazaa, WinMX, GNUtella or some other file sharing-type application or something else that takesconsiderable amounts of bandwidth, you may want to shut it down and see if that helps thesituation (even if you're using a high speed connection, these applications can use most of theresources of your connection).1603 MORE HELPInstall the package to a folder that is not encrypted.

0x81000303 Error Fix:YOU MUST BE LOGGED INTO WINDOWS XP AS AN Administrator
(This will not work as a User without those rights)STEP 1.Click Start>Control Panel>User Accounts. Some of you may have changed the way you click on things,
but the goal is to get into the User Accounts Panel which is in the Control Panel.STEP 2.This is a CRUCIAL step. Do not try to follow these steps if you are under
any other USER ACCOUNT that does not have Administrator rights.STEP 3.Once you are at the User Accounts Screen, you can click on one of the two buttons - Either click "Change an Account" under
the Pick Task option or just click the User Account listed under "or pick an account to change"STEP 4.Once you are at the User Account screen of the desired user, you will see several things on the screen.
There are several options for this so please make sure you choose the correct option for your computer set up.Options are:1..SINGLE COMPUTER - SINGLE USER ACCOUNT and/or MULTIPLE .NET PASSPORTS
2..SINGLE COMPUTER - MULTIPLE USER ACCOUNTS
1.. SINGLE COMPUTER - SINGLE USER ACCOUNT and/or MULTIPLE .NET PASSPORTS:If this is the only computer and there are no OTHER WINDOWS USER ACCOUNTS, this section is for you.A)On the main screen, under "What do you want to change about your account?", if you see the option "Set up my account to
use a .NET Passport", then click there. If you do not see this option, then proceed to STEP B) in this section.1)If the "Set up my account to use a .Net Passport" option is there, click on that. You will start a .Net Passport Wizard.
Please follow the instructions below carefully. This step is for associating your .Net Passport to yourWindows XP user account.2)If you do not wish to bind the two together or this option isn't showing, please proceed to STEP B) in this section
Once the Wizard has started, hit Next. The next screen should be "Do you have an e-mail address?" in bold letters at the
top of the Wizard. There are two choices you can make. Either Yes or No. Choosing no is to create a new hotmail account.Since you already have a .NET Passport, pick YES and click next.On the next screen it should say "Have you already registered your e-mail address with .NET Passport?" If you have, click yes. Then NEXT
Type in your email address and password. Since you are the ONLY user of Windows XP, and the only user account,
click "Associate my Passport with with my Windows user account". Hit Next. Now u won't receive the error anymore. Finished.
P.S. The following steps above will bind your .NET Passport to the USER ACCOUNT but still allow MORE then oneperson to use MSN. On the main screen of MSN, either click File>Sign In .... or click on the "To Sign In with a differentaccount" and the person at the computer can sign in with their own name and password to MSN.B)If you do not wish to bind the two together or this option isn't showing, please follow the instructions below.
In the first box on the left hand side of the screen is says "Related Tasks" and under it should have
"Manage my network passwords". Click that. There should be one or more different names or email addresses in the box. If you do not wish to bind your .NET Account
to your Windows XP User account, this is fine. Highlight each line in the box and click remove. Click Okay when itasks if you wish to remove that. After the entire box is empty, refer back to (A) but when you get to the step in thewizard that says "Associate my Passport with with my Windows user account" make sure it is unchecked. This option will make sure that when you click Sign In in MSN, you will always have to type in your email address andpassword. Remember, this is only if you do not wish to bind the .NET Passport to the User Account or you do not seethe option listed early.2..SINGLE COMPUTER - MULTIPLE USER ACCOUNTSIf you only have one computer and you have multiple Windows User Accounts in Windows XP, then this is your step.
If you DO NOT have multiple user accounts or the computer just logs directly into the main account,
please do not use this step. Please refer above! This step is for people that have one computer but more then one User Account when turning on the computer to go into
Windows XP. Each user can have their .NET Passport bound to their User Account. This is CRUCIAL. Do not try to follow these steps if you are under any other USER ACCOUNT that does not have
Administrator rights.Step 1: Click Start>Control Panel>User Accounts. Some of you may have changed the way you click on things,
but the goal is to get into the User Accounts Panel which is in the Control Panel.Step 2: Once you are at the User Accounts Screen, you can click on one of the two buttons - Either click "Change an Account"

I had this problem also.It took me a couple of days to fix.My fixed is different from everyone but it worked. This fix required that you edit the registry so make a backup before messing with the registry.
Go start, run, eventvwr.msc to open the event log.Click on application and you will see a list of errors with a red star next to them.Check for a heading to the top that says source.Under the source heading click on one of the lines that say msinstaller.that will open a window .In the window look for a number like C838BEBA7A1AD5C47B1EB83441062011,YOUR NUMBER MIGHT BE DIFFERENT.Open the registry editor ,start, run regedit .Click on edit, find and input the number.Delete each of the values of this number .It could be about twelve or more numbers. When completed close the registry and install MSN messenger.Posted April 22, 2004 12:54 PM

My m8 Jess' computer wouldnt let her on2 msn or hotmail or msn.com. I thin kit was a virus.
I told her to type "regsvr32 softpub.dll" (without the spaces) in2 "run..." an now her msn works fine. So that worked for me.

Thanks for your gi-normous post Lance, I think it's fixed! I tried everyone else's methods, but removing the registry entries and program files helped. Or maybe it was a combination of them all, thanks nonetheless.

Goto Start > Run > type in CMD when the box comes up enter these one by one hittin enter and wait for the confirmation it was done. Note third entry should take a bit longer then the others but it's fine. Ps no reboot required just exit totally outta MSN 6.1 and reload it. Hope this works for ya. Now I have a reason why everyone on my msn has disappeared lately. Prob the same problems.
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll regsvr32 initpki.dll regsvr32 dssenh.dll regsvr32 rsaenh.dll regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll regsvr32 sccbase.dll regsvr32 slbcsp.dll regsvr32 cryptdlg.dllor goto this link ftp://MSNFIX@dab00m.net/msnfix.bat for a quick run bat file. follow instructions within file.

Well anyway, I tried it, and It worked (for now anyway) 'cos earlier I thought uninstalling it and removing the registry entries fixed it, but I disconnected, and when I tried to reconnect, i had the same problems again.

well i have windows me and messenger 6.2 and it says the 0x81000370 error when i tried to log in then when i try to get to windows update site it told me that i have another error i tried to the askmarvin solution ( http://www.askmarvin.ca/forums/index.php?showtopic=664 ) but it does not work, let me explain what i get, when i tried to re-register the dll's i got an error with some of the dlls (gpkcsp.dll, sccbase.dll, slbcsp.dll) and its says: "LoadLibrary("") failed.
GetLastError returns 0x00000485then when i search for the dlls in the windows search i couldnt find these dlls, so i say: "What the heck, lets put this computer back to the factory settings", and i put the recovery disk of this computer and restore the computer back to the factory settings, deleting all i have done since!!!, hoping that the problem would go away, but, WHEN I DOWNLOAD MESSENGER, AND TRY TO CONNECT, IT SAY THE SAME PROBLEM (0x000370 ERROR), i just know that is a computer problem not a msn one cause i could not enter to any site that ask for certification, i even try to delete from the regedit the msnmessenger value but still doesnt work!!!
p.s. I EVEN DOWNLOAD THE ERROR DLLS BUT I DONT KNOW WHERE TO PUT IT ITS IN MY DESKSTOP RIGHT NOW, MAYBE THEY WERE DELETED, WHO KNOWS?, BUT I JUST HAVE IT ALL THE DLLS, SO IF YOU PLEASE TELL ME TE LOCATION OF THE DLLS SO I CAN JUST CUT AND PASTE IT TO THAT LOCATION IT MIGHT WORK....
i just ask you guys one thing, HOW THE HECK A WORM, OR A VIRUS OR WHATEVER SURVIVED A REBOOT TO FACTORY SETTINGS??!!!! I REALLY DONT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED BUT PLEASE HELP ME OUT!!!! I TRIED EVERYTHING (AND REMEMBER THAT I COULD NOT LOG TO ANY MESSENGER ACOUNT NOR WINDOWS UPDATE SITE)

Re:#243
Most Cryptographic service driver files that you were missing are in C:\WINNT\system32 or C:\WINNT\system32\dllcache for Win2k. I don't know about other operating systems. Check to see where your existing crypto service files are located (i.e. softpub.dll, wintrust.dll, etc.)Posted May 14, 2004 12:29 AM
To #243 - Anonymous ... maybe your computer just isn't able to run MSN .. get a new computer if internet chatting is that important to you.

Error code 0x81000370
There are now a few websites offering help on this (and the number is growing daily) - odd that MSN seem to be unaware of this error code. Have now tried pretty much everything including all the advice on how to resolve msn's latest blunder - to no avail. (well unless wasting an entire day trying is worth something?)
Life is short and we dont have time for this. This is the 21st Century - progress?
Lets ALL email MSN or use the report a problem option and let the programmers at MSN know that there is a HUGE problem with Messenger and it is affecting stax of people - good people like you and I.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>If enough of us good folk pester the wealthy geeks at MSN maybe something useful will get done.

Posted June 5, 2004 1:54 PM
I have found that some of the problems have been due to strange entries in the registry. Therefore the solution was:
Remove MSN Messenger for am sure the hundreth time of resolving this issue.
Control Panel > Add Remove Programs > Remove MSN Messenger
Open up the regedit
Start> Run> regedit Go to HKEY_USERS Expand each Key i.e. .DEFAULT or S-1-5-xxYou will see Keys such as AppsEvents Console these are as expect so DO NOT TOUCH THESE BUT , I found a number of strange Keys found under this header All are empty and mine all have a Euro Symbol () or Block Symbol () check each one as the keys where empty folders. Remove them all.Now you can ensure that you are on SP1 of Internet Explorer, if not ensure your upto date with the security patches using
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
Now ensure the MSN key is removed ,
Start> Run> msiexec /unreg
Now load the softpub.dll
Start> Run> regsvr32 softpub.dll
Now check for the old folders from previous MSN Messenger installations.
Start> Run> %appdata%\Microsoft
If you find a MSN Messenger folder delete it. This has to be done for each user profile on your pc. Do the same for the "C:\Program Files\" and remove the MSN Messenger folder from there.
Reboot your PC and Now your ready to re-install MSN Messenger
http://messenger.msn.com/download
Once downloaded , make sure you do NOT sign in via the Sign in button if it has your .Net Pass ID visable instead use the "File: Sign in" option and put your password in that way. If it goes in ok, you can save it again and use the normal sign in from that point.
Took me a while to work this out, so I have it works for most of you guys.
Regards Graham

Please verify that you have the latest updates for the above programs, which might be preventing a connection to the MSN Messenger service, and refer to the documentation for each program to verify that the program is set up to allow communication using MSN Messenger. Once you have done this, try signing in to MSN Messenger again.Posted June 23, 2004 8:08 PM

The best way to overcome the MS Messenger6.1 sign in problem is to format the hard drive and install the fresh new Windows XP. After completed with the installation of new Windows XP, uninstall the MS Messeger 4.7 that came with it. Then install the MS Messenger 6.2 (skip the 6.0 or 6.1 version).I am sure you will be able to sign in.

OK PPL, IF YOU HAVE THE PROBLEM WITH THE FIREWALL I GARRANTEE THIS WILL WORK:
GO TO START > LOOK AROUND FOR ANY PROGRAMS LIKE NORTON ANTI VIRUS, ETRUST etc.. IN FACT OPEN ALL "ANTI-VIRUS" PROGRAMS ON YOUR COMPUTER, WHAT EVER THE PROGRAM IS.. LOOK FOR A "FIREWALL" TAB OR BUTTON OR WATEVER IN THE PROGRAM AND SWITCH THE F*CKER OFF!!... IN MY CASE THE FIREWALL PROGRAM WAS "ETRUST"
HOPE THIS HELPS, COS IT DROVE ME NUTS!!

Problems with MSN, UNICOW.dll, anny solutions? Thanks!
Posted August 23, 2004 6:29 AM
Posted a message earlier about UNICOWS.DLL. All i can say is that i have found absolutely no solutions. Even tried version 5 of msn. That one will open but will not let me sign in saying that my password is incorrecr. i was forced to download trillian which isnt half as good as msn but still allows me to talk to my contacts!! Anyone with the same problem as me, i suggest you download this because you probably wont be able to find a solution for a while!!!!
You can download trillian at this address:

The way to solve the error messge 0x81000365...
If u hav ne programs like nortorn internet secruty or adaware... click on them and where it says firewall turn on/off wake sure u turn it OFF. Try signing into messenger now. It should work. It took me ages to figure this out but this is all u hav to do.

Hey everybody! I took the suggestion from above and it worked great for me!
WINDOWS 2000, XP1) Click Start > Run
2) Type: %appdata%\Microsoft and press enter.
3) Right-click the MSN Messenger folder and delete it.
Now restart MSN Messenger and try to sign in again...
Posted September 7, 2004 5:58 AM
Solution for messenger signing in with windows xp because it says error "we are unable to sign you into net messanger services. possible because of a problem with the server or your internet connection.make sure your connected to the internet.0x81000301" :
1.Click on Start, then Run, type: "regedit" (Without Quotes)
2.Navigate to MyComputer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger
4.Click the MSN Messenger Key (Click Once).
5.Create (or edit if already exists) a string value with the value name --> server
and value data--> messenger.hotmail.com:18636.Close regedit and try to sign in.
This has worked in all versions I have seen, [versions 4.1 to 6.2]
Have fun :-}Posted September 7, 2004 4:40 PM
We tried a variation. I have a laptop with Norton installed, and we kept on getting the 365 msg. We SEEMED to circumvent it by switching Norton off, then signing in, THEN switching Norton on again. (Granted, we've only tried messaging, but that was good enough for us)
Posted September 7, 2004 4:48 PM
Sorry - take that last post back. Seems it ONLY works if the user has an admin. account. What a crock of s**t
Posted September 8, 2004 8:33 PM
if you have nortons internet security or any thing like it msn has aproblem with it i turned mine off and it worked fine need to tell fire wall to allow msn to be used.

Hi,, iv been having this 0x81000301 problem .. i Checked "SOME" of the solutions mentioned here.. but none worked :/ .. I formatted my machine and but the problem remained .. untill i checked "Silvio-Portugal " solutions .. and it worked..
just wanna tell ya.. i guess this works with msn 6.2 only "im not sure tho" oh and .. i run the e-trust antivirus and no it doesnt stop msn from running...
if ur problem is the 0x81000301 EXACTLY "not any other error" then please do the steps "Silvio-Portugal" mentioned.. so if u gonna do those steps.. MAKE SURE U EXIT MSN
but one thing i would clarify, that is step 5:
simply go to Edit -----> New -----> String Value (and name it as "server")
then go to edit again (or right click on "server") -----> Modify -------> value data (type in messenger.hotmail.com:1863 )
Finally.. RESTAAAAAAAAAAAAART ur machine.. u just have to .. and try ur msn out.. it would work !!
Thanx Silvio-Portugal .. that was really usefull
Good luck guys ;)

I'm going to Lose it!!! Ok I think I've completely F*#^ed s@%t up!! I received the 0x81000310 error on Sunday morning. Being impatient and stubborn I've been trying for the past 2 days to access my hotmail and fix this problem!! Of course for securtiy reasons I keep getting directed into the "create new password". I need to point out I'm absolutley 100%absent minded! When I'm asked to answer my securtiy question . . . I have NO IDEA what I entered years ago when I created this account! So now in my MANY attempts create a new password I have a temporary hold placed on my account . . . sigh . . . .
Can anyone help me!!! I've tried every sugestion given!!! Nothing is working!!!!! Send HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!

SOLUTION FOR INSTALLATION PROBLEMS
MAKE SURE U CLOSE ALL THE PROGRAMS IN THE TASK BAR. (INCLUDING AD-AWARE AND POPUP STOPPERS)TO CORRECT WINDOWS INSTALLER DO THIS:WIN 2000 OR XPclick Start, Run, and then "copy" and "paste" the following command into the box:%systemroot%\system32\dllcache\msiexec.exe /regserver(DON'T FORGET THE "SPACE" BETWEEN msiexec.exe and /regserver)WIN 98 OR MEclick Start, Run, and then "copy" and "paste" the following command into the box:C:\Windows\System\msiexec.exe /regserver(Don't forget the "SPACE" between msiexec.exe and /regserver)(You will need to change the C:\ to whichever drive Windows is on)IF UR RUNNING WIN XP OR 2000 MAKE SURE UR WINDOWS INSTALLER SERVICE IS RUNNING. Heres how to check:Start --> Settings --> Control Panel, Click on Administrative tools, then find and click on Services..
Then look for Windows Installer, which will be way down the list as it's in Alphabetical Order.Make sure the service is running, if not, RIGHT click on it and choose Start, you might also want to change it to start Automatically to avoid problems like this in the future.MSN6 Keeps freezing when I sign in, or just after I sign in.(This fix will also usually work if you cannot sign in at all.)1.Exit MSN Messenger Program completely 2.Click on Start, then Run, type: "regedit" (Without Quotes) 3.Navigate to MyComputer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger 4.Click the MSN Messenger Key (Click Once). Go to the Edit menu and select Delete 5.Delete the MSN Messenger folder from c:\Program Files (Replace C: with your system disk if it is something other than C) 6.Install MSN MESSENGERWhile Installing, I encounter Error 1603 - and the installation fails.
1.Navigate to your System folder, usually c:\WINDOWS or c:\WinNT 2.Enter the WinSxS folder 3.You should see a folder called InstallTemp, rename it to InstallTemp2 4.Find the file x86_Microsoft.Windows.Networking.Dxmrtp_6595b64144ccf1df_5.2.0.4868_x-ww_212f7d9e AND RENAME IT TO THIS:x86_Microsoft.Windows.Networking.Dxmrtp_6595b64144ccf1df_5.2.0.4868_x-ww_212f7d9e25.Now install MSN MESSENGERSIGN IN SOLUTIONZZZZZ!!!!!
WINDOWS 98,ME1) Click Start > Run2) Type: %windir% and press enter.3) Open Application Data and then the Microsoft folder.4) Right-click the MSN Messenger folder and delete it.Note: if you're using Profiles with Windows 98/ME, you'll need to go to the Profiles folder, choose your username and then go to the Application Data folder (then continue with the sameprocess). If you don't know if you have Profiles setup, most likely you do not (if you don't have Profiles folder in the Windows folder, then you aren't).Now restart MSN Messenger and try to sign in again...WINDOWS 2000, XP1) Click Start > Run2) Type: %appdata%\Microsoft and press enter.3) Right-click the MSN Messenger folder and delete it.Now restart MSN Messenger and try to sign in again...FIXES
VERY FIRST ONEClick Start, then Run, and enter the following:regsvr32 softpub.dllthen click OK(DONT FORGET THE "SPACE" BETWEEN regsvr32 and softpub.dll)1. The date on your computer needs to be set properly -- double click the
clock verify that the time and date are set.2. Also verify that 'Use SSL2.0' and Use SSL 3.0' is checked, then click OK.----Prevent Windows Messenger from automatically running(sumtimes it might say u are signed in from another location cuz windows messenger is running wen ur running msn messenger)TO FIX THIS U HAVE TO STOP WINDOWS MESSENGER FROM RUNNING.TO DISABLE WINDOWS MESSENGER FROM LOADING:Windows XP HomeClick Start->Settings ->Control Panel Click Performance and Maintenance Click Administrative Tools Double click Services Scroll down and highlight "Messenger" Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties. Click the STOP button. Select Disable in the Startup Type scroll bar Click OK Windows XP ProfessionalClick Start->Settings ->Control Panel Click Administrative Tools Click Services Double click Services Scroll down and highlight "Messenger" Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties. Click the STOP button. Select Disable in the Startup Type scroll bar Click OKpost # 71 - Pascal's fix
Hi everyone,
I just wanted to add another solution. I tried to get my MSN MSGR to work after receiving the same error 0x81000310 using all the suggestions posted above. In the end what I got to work is when i went into outlook (XP)and went into sign on there, it popped right up. post #97 - Satrianus' fixMaybe this helps some of you ???
I've been having the same problems for days. Couldn't sign in to msn messager 6.1, couldn't login to hotmail and even the Windows update page gave an error when I scanned for updates !!!I also had norton internet security( for months already, no problems at all ). I found out that deinstalling norton internet security solved all my problems at once. For the ones that have norton internet security: When I tried to uninstall it said I couldn't because I wasn't logged in as a supervisor. The solution was to go to the symantec website and download their manual post #108- Aliya's fixello people i think this mite resolve the problem with the 301 error thing:If you are running Windows 2000 make certain all the latest updates are installed as well as the latest Direct X. This is known to cause problems with Messenger's audio and may cause other problems.Turning off the QoS Packet Scheduler. To do this:In Windows, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Network and Internet Connection, and then click Network Connections. Right-click the network or Internet connection that is currently enabled, and then click Properties. Clear the QoS Packet Scheduler check box. Restart your computer. Sign in to MSN Messenger and try again.post #115- Pete
never mind, I fixed it myself. If anyone else is having the same problem and you have IE. Go to tools --> internet options --> privacy (tab) --> advanced --> under third party cookies, make sure they are being accepted
post #122 - Grant Hack's fix
if your having problems with msn messanger 6.1 signing in with windows 2000 because it says error "we are unable to sign you into net messanger services. possible because of a problem with the server or your internet connection.make sure your connected to the internet.0x81000310" The fix to get rid of this is to do this ....1.Exit MSN Messenger Program completely
2.Click on Start, then Run, type: "regedit" (Without Quotes) 3.Navigate to MyComputer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger 4.Click the MSN Messenger Key (Click Once). Go to the Edit menu and select Delete 5.Exit your regedit and goto your msn again and start it up and sign in... it should work again!post #141 - Anonymous' fix
just to add to #126s comment, i had error 0x81000301 after installing MSN messenger 6.1 too. I clicked "yes (always allow)" and everything is fine.
post #341 - Knight's fixFor anyone who cant get into MSN or hotmail or anything, try this:
1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. In the Open box, type regsvr32 jscript.dll, and then click OK. 3. Click OK. 4. Click Start, and then click Run. 5. In the Open box, type regsvr32 vbscript.dll, and then click OK. 6. Click OK.Worked for me!=D
There are more here if you take the time to read altho it's alot..I'm too tired too read em all for you sorry..some other solutions do a restore with no updates (temp fix), make sure your firewall is set to allow msn, or reinstall firewall, and set to always allow, even if u disable it, it could be running in the background otherwise. GL and if you don't find your fix here...google it :DPosted March 22, 2005 8:12 PM
Ahhh you guys, i've been tyrin to fix my damn msn for like 5 months and today i found this site and did what the bottom of it says (to copy n paste all those commands into the "RUN" box) and it worked, i fixed it! hope this helps for anyone else b/c i kno the pain it's beein tryin to fix it, best of luck!

I downloaded msn messenger 6.2 and everytime I try to sign in it tells me that theres a new version of messenger available and that it won't let me proceed until I download the new version. What do I do? What about if I don't want that new version. Hello!! msn people not everyone likes to be actualized!!!
Posted September 16, 2005 2:52 AM
For all the people who can`t get into msn messenger, hotmail or update, even after trying all the advice above, try these. Its the only thing that worked for me. Just read down, and let the man ramble, he`s a saint!!
let me ramble for a minute here:
checking the ipconfig is useless(but good to know how to do)
looking in your router is also unneccessary but again good to know.
no need to compare these settings with someone else you won’t see what the problem is.
WEBMASTER PLEASE CONTACT EVERYONE ON THIS TOPIC THAT A POSSIBLE SOLUTION HAS BEEN POSTED AND IS WORTH A TRY!
my problems were not being able to sign in to hotmail, or view my bank website, or do a windows update, or do much on ebay.
this is what i did and it should work for anyone having the same problems that i was having. please be careful when doing this, there is no “undo” or “back” or “save” options in the registry; so, be careful!!!
{my pc was running xp home edition}
1. close all programs.
2. click START (lower lefthand corner of screen)
3. click RUN…
4. type REGEDIT
5. hit ENTER
6. double click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
7. double click on SYSTEM
8. double click on CurrentControlSet
9. double click on Services
10. double click on Tcpip
11. double click on Parameters
12. double click on Interfaces
-pause, and calm down we’re close but now a little detective work is needed. there are some folders in here with long alphanumeric names that have some of the same contents. i won’t pretend to know what they are or what for. all you need to know is which one has the most stuff in it.
just click on each one to view the contents and determine which holds the most files. in my experience there were only four folders (two roughly the same, one small and one big) and it was real easy to find the largest one.
13. view the contents (of the largest folder) and look for
“mtu REG_DWORD 0×0000044c (1100)”
chances are you won’t see it so we have to add it. if you do see it skip to step 17.
14. right click on the largest folder (with the wacky name) and select
New D_WORD Value
15. type mtu
16. hit enter
17. right click on the REG_DWORD you just created as mtu
18. select Modify
19. a small screen will pop-up saying
Edit DWORD Value
in the box for Base Hexadecimal is the default, select the Decimal value.
20. on the left of the pop-up under Value data type in 1100.
21. hit enter
22. exit the registry editor now and restart your machine.
THAT’S IT!!!!!!!!
as soon as i restarted i saw that i had windows updates automatically downloading like the good ol’ days and it didn’t time out or crash or give me a stupid error. next i opened internet explorer, cleared the history, cookies, & temp files and went to hotmail to see if all this effort was worth it. i signed in and held my breath until the login page disappeared, was replaced by a blank page, then my messages came up just like they were supposed to and i could open, delete, send messages again. i hope this works for all of you like it did for me. please spread the news to anyone you can but try to get websites like this one handle it. remember there are over 200 million hotmail users. i’ll be posting this wherever i can. Mark “Striker” Baldwin is the guy who showed me how to fix the registry.
there may be another way to alter the MTU settings on your machine but i think it’s safest to leave the routers and modems set at their maximums and to just edit the registry. this keeps you from downloading any registry software programs or screwing up your routers and modems even worse.
good luck everyone. if you still get errors, maybe in the attempts to troubleshoot other problems something has been changed and you may need to go back to your original settings.
anyone know of a good email service to switch to? now that i can get at my account i’ll be backing things up on paper and moving before the next hotmail disaster.

I got a messenger program named Trillian Pro, supposed to combine messengers, (in my case, yahoo and MSN), and it will let me sighn my yahoo account to it, but not the MSN. It says, Invalid Password, and I know I put the right password in. I've istalled, un-installed, and reinstalled, can't get it to sighn in my MSN acount. Can I get some help?

Hello again.
For step by step Instructions, Walkthrough (walk through), Guide to disable, remove, uninstall, eliminate, eradicate, delete We-blocker, Weblocker; Email me tjomara37@yahoo.com I will be more than glad to assist you.
I know its frustrating for all of those who have this program and now your stuck. I was there myself. Some of you have:
1. Lost we-blocker password.
2. Virus screwed up we-blocker so it will not function properly anymore.
3. Someone gave you a computer that had we-blocker already installed without giving the password.
4. Someone may have downloaded this filter to your computer without your permission.
I have had several people contact me explaining many different situations like these... I am glad to help. Send me a email, as I check my email several times a day I will give you the easy step by step instructions to remove, disable, uninstall, delete we-blocker. You do not have to know much about computers to follow these directions. They are very simple.
