Tony Hawk HelmetCam - better for bikers?
October 3, 2005 12:54 AM
Digital Blue has created the Tony Hawk HelmetCam, a $99 helmet-mountable camera capable of recording 45 minutes of video on a memory card.
I think they are marketing this to the wrong audience.
They should be selling this to city bike riders.
When I was in New York for the 9/11 bike ride, I met a cyclist who was hit by a car. She now wears a helmet-mounted camera and a recorder that straps to her waist. If she is hit again, or sees somebody get hit, she'll have video evidence of who was at fault. Her setup was far more bulky than what is being offered by Digital Blue, and I wonder if this device would be a more ideal solution.
Digital Blue's web site, while attractive and blue, has just the one picture you see here of device, and no technical information. There aren't even even any sample videos. Has anybody given this device a try?
It seems like something all city bikers should have.

TigerDirect.com now carry's the Tony Hawk HelmetCam and has done an excellent job with different product shots and technical information. I acctually have some footage that Tony hawk himself made with the HelmetCam. Please email me at the address above if you would like me to send it to you.
Also, Your point above is a good one, this camera is great for any and all action sports videos from Skateboarding to Motorcycling to Bike riding to Mountain Biking, to snowboarding (the camera is water resistant not water proof) to hiking etc... It is a must have for all action sports participants.

Excellent idea. I purchased a Tony Hawk helmetcam for my son to use in ice hockey. The camera comes with a 32Mb SD card which is good for about 5 minutes of video. You can use larger cards for more recording time. http://wwww.gamestop.com and sometimes Tiger Direct have it for $49.99. It uses 2 AAA batteries and only weighs a few ounces. It has a pretty sturdy rubber strap, or you could probably screw the mounting bracket directly to a helmet. There is a built in microphone. No cables are needed while recording. When not connected to a computer it records 320x240 at 15 fps.
